Pinpoint Test I: The Power Lumbar Is Inoperative - Driver

WARNING: Remove restraint system diagnostic tools from the vehicle prior to road testing. If tools are not removed, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) device may not deploy in a crash. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash and possibly violate vehicle safety standards.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
CAUTION: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON.
NOTE: The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  1. I1 CHECK THE LUMBAR MOTOR OPERATION 
    • Actuate the lumbar control switch to the inflate position.
    • Does the lumbar compressor run? 
    1. YES  : Go to  I2.
    2. NO  : Go to  I3.
  2. I2 CHECK THE AIRFLOW FROM THE LUMBAR MOTOR 
    • Disconnect the air hose from the lumbar motor fitting.
    • Actuate the lumbar control switch to the inflate position while feeling for air at the motor connection.
    • Is air blowing from the lumbar motor fitting? 
    1. YES  : CHECK the hoses for leaks, disconnection or obstruction. REPAIR as necessary. If the hoses are OK, INSTALL a new lumbar assembly. REFER to Lumbar Assembly . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new lumbar assembly. REFER to Lumbar Assembly . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  3. I3 CHECK CIRCUIT 517 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Depower the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in the General Procedures portion of SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, carry out the following:
      • Disconnect the driver seat side air bag C315.
      • Connect the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool to the driver seat side air bag C315.
    • Disconnect: Lumbar Control Switch C361
    • WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
    • Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING & CABLES article.

    • Measure the voltage between lumbar control switch C361-2, circuit 517 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  I4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the battery junction box (BJB) circuit breaker 601 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 517 (BK/WH). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  4. I4 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Lumbar Motor C366

    • Measure the resistance between lumbar motor C366-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  I5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  5. I5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE LUMBAR MOTOR 
    • Connect: Lumbar Control Switch

    • Measure the voltage between lumbar motor C366-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side and C366-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side while pressing the lumbar control switch inflate button.

    • Measure the voltage between lumbar motor C366-2, circuit 1097 (BN), harness side and C366-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side while pressing the lumbar control switch deflate button.
    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new lumbar assembly. REFER to Lumbar Assembly . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : Go to  I6.
  6. I6 CHECK CIRCUITS 1094 (PK) AND 1097 (BN) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Lumbar Control Switch C361

    • Measure the resistance between lumbar control switch C361-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side and lumbar motor C366-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side; and between lumbar control switch C361-3, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side and lumbar motor C366-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side.

    • Measure the resistance between lumbar control switch C361-7, circuit 1097 (BN), harness side and lumbar motor C366-2, circuit 1097 (BN), harness side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  I7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  7. I7 CHECK CIRCUITS 1094 (PK) AND 1097 (BN) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure the resistance between lumbar motor C366-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side and ground; and between lumbar motor C366-2, circuit 1097 (BN), harness side and ground.
    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  I8.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  8. I8 CHECK CIRCUITS 1094 (PK) AND 1097 (BN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between lumbar motor C366-1, circuit 1094 (PK), harness side and ground; and between lumbar motor C366-2, circuit 1097 (BN), harness side and ground.
    • Is voltage present on either circuit? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new lumbar control switch. REFER to Lumbar Control Switch . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from driver seat side air bag module C315. CONNECT driver seat side air bag module C315. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
