Pinpoint Test H: No Controller Are Network (Can) Communication

- H1 CHECK THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) C251 FOR DAMAGE
- Inspect the DLC C251 for damage.
- Is the DLC C251 OK?
- Yes : If equipped with a trailer brake controller, GO to H2. If not equipped with a trailer brake controller, GO to H5.
- No : REPAIR the DLC C251 as necessary. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H2 CHECK THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER C2142B FOR DAMAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Trailer Brake Controller C2142b.
- Inspect the trailer brake controller C2142b for damage.
- Is the trailer brake controller C2142b OK?
- Yes : GO to H3.
- No : REPAIR the trailer brake controller C2142b as necessary. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H3 CHECK CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC C251 AND THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER C2142B
- Measure the resistance between the trailer brake controller C2142b pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the trailer brake controller C2142b pin 7, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H4.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H4 CHECK THE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK WITH THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER C2142B DISCONNECTED
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Data Link Diagnostics Test.
- Is system passed obtained?
- Yes : GO to H19.
- No : CONNECT the trailer brake controller C2142b. GO to H5.
- H5 CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE C135 FOR DAMAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
- Inspect the ABS module C135 for damage.
- Is the ABS module C135 OK?
- Yes : GO to H6.
- No : REPAIR the ABS module C135 as necessary. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H6 CHECK CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC C251 AND THE ABS MODULE C135
- Measure the resistance between the ABS module C135 pin 3, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the ABS module C135 pin 18, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H7.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H7 CHECK THE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK WITH THE ABS MODULE C135 DISCONNECTED
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Data Link Diagnostics Test.
- Is system passed obtained?
- Yes : GO to H16.
- No : CONNECT the ABS module C135. GO to H8.
- H8 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) C175B (GAS) OR C1381b (DIESEL) FOR DAMAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175b (gas) or PCM C1381b (diesel).
- Inspect the PCM C175b (gas) or C1381b (diesel) for damage.
- Is the PCM C175b (gas) or C1381b (diesel) OK?
- Yes
: For gas engine vehicles, GO to H9.
For diesel engine vehicles, GO to H10.
- No : REPAIR the PCM C175b (gas) or C1381b (diesel) as necessary. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H9 CHECK CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC C251 AND THE PCM C175B - GAS ENGINE VEHICLES
- Measure the resistance between the PCM C175b pin 11, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM C175b pin 23, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H11.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H10 CHECK CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC C251 AND THE PCM C1381b - DIESEL ENGINE VEHICLES
- Measure the resistance between the PCM C1381b pin 13, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM C1381b pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H11.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H11 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER C220B FOR DAMAGE
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
- Inspect the instrument cluster C220b for damage.
- Is the instrument cluster C220b OK?
- Yes : GO to H12.
- No : REPAIR the instrument cluster C220b as necessary. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H12 CHECK CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC C251 AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER C220B
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 7, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 6, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H13.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H13 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
- Disconnect: Trailer Brake Module C2142b.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- No : GO to H14.
- H14 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS 1908 (WH) AND 1909 (BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251 pin 6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251 pin 14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- Yes : GO to H15.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- H15 CHECK THE CAN WITH A SUBSTITUTED PCM
- Connect: ABS Module C135.
- Connect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
- Connect: Trailer Brake Module C2142b.
- INSTALL a known good PCM. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - DIESEL ENGINE .
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Data Link Diagnostics Test.
- Is system passed obtained?
- H16 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all the ABS module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the ABS module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL . CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). REPEAT the self-test.
- H17 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- H18 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. For gas engine, REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES . For diesel engine, REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - DIESEL ENGINE . CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- H19 CHECK FOR CORRECT TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER OPERATION
- Disconnect all the trailer brake controller connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the trailer brake controller connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new trailer brake controller. REFER to AUXILIARY BRAKE SYSTEM . CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
