Pinpoint Test C: The Shift Interlock System Does Not Release/Lock Correctly

  1. C1 TEST FUSE F16 (10A) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Check fuse: Fuse F16 (10A)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C3.
    2. NO  : INSTALL the fuse. TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse fails again, go to  C2 .
  2. C2 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between the brake pedal position (BPP) switch connector pin 5 and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C3.
  3. C3 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the output side of fuse F16 (10A) and BPP switch connector pin 5.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. C4 TEST BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH 
    • Measure the resistance between the BPP switch, pin 5 and pin 6 while open (OFF) and closed (ON).

    • Is the resistance of the switch greater than 10,000 ohms while OFF and less than 5 ohms while ON? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C5.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new BPP switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. C5 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch
    • For vehicles equipped with a column shifter, measure the resistance between shift interlock solenoid connector pin 2 and ground.

    • For vehicles equipped with a floor shifter, measure the resistance between the shift control electrical connector pin 1 and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C6.
  6. C6 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK ACTUATOR CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
    • For vehicles equipped with a column shifter, measure the resistance between the shift interlock actuator connector pin 2 and the BPP switch connector pin 6.

    • For vehicles equipped with a floor shifter, measure the resistance between the shift control electrical connector pin 1 and the BPP switch connector pin 6.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : If equipped with a column shifter, go to  C10 . If equipped with a floor shifter, go to  C7 .
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. C7 TEST FUSE F15 (5A) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Check fuse: F15 (5A)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL the fuse and TEST the system for normal operations. If the fuse fails again, go to  C8 .
  8. C8 TEST FLOOR SHIFTER CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between the shift control electrical connector pin 2 and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C9.
  9. C9 TEST FLOOR SHIFTER CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the output side of fuse F15 (5A) and shift control electrical connector pin 2.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C10.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. C10 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
    • If equipped with a column shifter, measure the resistance between shift interlock actuator connector pin 4 and ground.

    • If equipped with a floor shifter, measure the resistance between shift control electrical connector pin 6 and ground.
    • Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?

    1. YES  : INSTALL a new shift lock actuator. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit. RECONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
