Pinpoint Test J: The Anti-Lock Brake System (Abs) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. J1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded ABS module DTCs.
    • Are any ABS module DTCs present? 
    1. YES  : REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article.
    2. NO  : Go to  J2.
  2. J2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OUTPUT STATE CONTROL USING THE SCAN TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Output State Control
    • Enter the instrument cluster output state control and select ABS_LAMP. Command the ABS warning indicator on then off and observe the ABS warning indicator.
    • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
    1. YES  : Go to  J3.
    2. NO  : Go to  J4.
  3. J3 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  4. J4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC)  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
