Pinpoint Test H: The Video System Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln Mark LT and 2007 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The DVD player buttons can be disabled at the audio unit by simultaneously pressing the audio unit preset buttons (3 and 5) or (3 and 6). To re-enable the DVD player buttons, turn the audio unit off and back on. The headphone symbol lights up on the audio unit display to indicate that the DVD player buttons are re-enabled.
NOTE: Turning the ignition switch off and back on may not re-enable the DVD player buttons.
NOTE: For most conditions, except after carrying out the audio unit self-diagnostic test, the DVD player buttons can also be re-enabled by simultaneously pressing buttons 3 and 5 until the headphone symbol appears on the audio unit display or by simultaneously pressing buttons 2 and 4. Pressing buttons 2 and 4 also changes the system between Single Play Mode and Dual Play Mode. In Dual Play Mode, the rear speakers and subwoofer turn off and the headphone outputs turn on.
  1. H1 CHECK THE AUDIO UNIT AUX BUTTON 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Press the audio unit AUX button several times.
    • Does the audio unit display one or more of the following: NO AUX AUDIO, AUX, NO DVD/CD, or DVD/CD PLAY, PAUSE or STOP? 
    1. YES  : If the audio unit displays NO AUX AUDIO for 5 seconds, go to  H8.

      Otherwise, go to  H2.

    2. NO  : REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized audio system repair facility. REFER to Audio Unit  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
  2. H2 CHECK IF THE DVD PLAYER BUTTONS ARE DISABLED 
    • Turn the audio unit off, then back on.
    • Observe the audio unit display on the left side of the clock.
    • Is the headphone symbol lit on the audio unit display? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H3.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized audio system repair facility. REFER to Audio Unit  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
  3. H3 CHECK FOR A DISC 
    • Press the audio unit AUX button several times.
    • Does the audio unit display NO DVD/CD and AUX? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H5.
    2. NO  : Go to  H4.
  4. H4 CHECK THE DVD PLAYER BUTTONS 
    NOTE: MENU only functions with DVDs. It has no function for audio, video and MP3 CDs or other sources.
    NOTE: MEM only functions while in a DVD MENU or any disc type DISPLAY menu. It also selects the next tuner preset and the next CD for a 6-disc audio unit.
    NOTE: The volume + button does not increase the volume past the volume set with the audio unit volume knob in single play mode.
    • Press the DVD player PLAY button and then the other buttons.
    • Does the system operate correctly? 
    1. YES  : The DVD PLAY buttons had been disabled at the audio unit, or the disc the customer was using is not compatible with this DVD player or has no or very quiet audio. NOTIFY the customer. The system is operating correctly.
    2. NO  : Go to  H5.
  5. H5 CHECK THE DVD PLAYER WITH A KNOWN GOOD DISC 
    • Press the DVD player STOP/EJECT button 2 times (1/2 second apart or more).
    • Remove the disc if one was ejected. (If not removed, after 10 seconds, the disc is pulled back in, but does not start playing.)
    • Place a known good disc in the DVD player.
    • Is the disc pulled into the DVD player? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H6.
    2. NO  : Go to  H8.
  6. H6 CHECK THE DVD PLAYER OPERATION 
    • Press the DVD player PLAY button and then the other buttons.
    • Does the system operate correctly? 
    1. YES  : The original disc is not compatible with this DVD player or has no or very quiet audio. NOTIFY the customer. The system is operating correctly.
    2. NO  : Go to  H7.
  7. H7 CHECK THE DVD PLAYER DISPLAY 
    NOTE: When the DVD player is unplugged and not replaced, the rear speakers are not connected.
    • If one or more of the DVD buttons do not respond, try them with an alternate type of disc and other sources.
    • Are only some of the buttons inoperative? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the DVD player and SEND it to an authorized audio system repair facility. REFER to Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Player  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
    2. NO  : Go to  H14.
  8. H8 CHECK CIRCUIT 720 (RD/YE) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DVD Player C949
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the DVD player C949-1, circuit 720 (RD/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H9.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuse 4 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. H9 CHECK CIRCUIT 1204 (BK/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the DVD player C949-3, circuit 1204 (BK/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H10.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. H10 CHECK CIRCUITS 832 (LB/PK) AND 833 (TN) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE DVD PLAYER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the DVD player, harness side and ground as follows:
      DVD Player Connector-Pin Circuit Expected Value
      C949-4 832 (LB/PK) Approximately 3.2 volts
      C949-5 833 (TN) Approximately 1.9 volts

    • Are the voltages as expected? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H13.
    2. NO  : Go to  H11.
  11. H11 CHECK CIRCUITS 832 (LB/PK) AND 833 (TN) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Audio Unit C290b
    • Measure the resistance between the audio unit, harness side and the DVD player, harness side; and between the audio unit, harness side and ground as follows:
      Audio Unit Connector-Pin DVD Player Connector-Pin Circuit
      C290b-15 C949-4 832 (LB/PK)
      C290b-16 C949-5 833 (TN)
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms between the audio unit and the DVD player; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the audio unit and ground? 
    1. YES  : SEND the audio unit to an authorized audio system repair facility. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit in question. Go to  H12.
  12. H12 RECHECK THE VOLTAGE OF CIRCUITS 832 (LB/PK) AND 833 (TN) AT THE DVD PLAYER 
    • Connect: Audio Unit C290b
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the DVD player, harness side and ground as follows:
      DVD Player Connector-Pin Circuit Expected Value
      C949-4 832 (LB/PK) Approximately 3.2 volts
      C949-5 833 (TN) Approximately 1.9 volts

    • Are the voltages as expected? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H13.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized audio system repair facility. REFER to Audio Unit  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
  13. H13 RECHECK THE DVD PLAYER 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: DVD Player C949
    • Key in ON position.
    • Test the DVD player for normal operation.
    • Does the DVD player function correctly? 
    1. YES  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
    2. NO  : Go to  H14.
  14. H14 SUBSTITUTE THE DVD PLAYER 
    NOTE: When the DVD player is unplugged and not replaced, the rear speakers are not connected.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Install a known good DVD player.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Test the DVD player for normal operation.
    • Does the DVD player function correctly? 
    1. YES  : SEND the original DVD player to an authorized audio system repair facility. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized audio system repair facility. REFER to Audio Unit  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation after the repair.
