Pinpoint Test S: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. S1 OBSERVE THE INDICATOR 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Start the vehicle. Observe the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
    • Is the indicator illuminated? 

    Yes  : GO to S2.

    No  : GO to  S9.

  2. S2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM DTCs recorded? 

    Yes  : REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.

    No  : GO to S3.

  3. S3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND TCM SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded TCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any TCM DTCs recorded? 

    Yes  : REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6 SPEED to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.

    No  : GO to S4.

  4. S4 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command. Trigger the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator active command on and off. Observe the indicator.
    • Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when triggered on, and turn off when triggered off? 

    Yes  : GO to S5.

    No  : GO to  S9.

  5. S5 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TCM REQUEST PID 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster PID.
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster TCM PID.
    • Does the TCM PID read YES? 

    Yes  : GO to  S7.

    No  : GO to S6.

  6. S6 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL REQUEST PID 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster PID.
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster electronic throttle control request PID.
    • Does the electronic throttle control request PID read YES? 

    Yes  : GO to  S8.

    No  : GO to  S9.

  7. S7 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the TCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the TCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6 SPEED . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  8. S8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L , or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  9. S9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
