Pinpoint Test F: The Low Fuel Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On (If Equipped)

  1. F1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command. Trigger the low fuel warning indicator active command on and off. Observe the low fuel warning indicator.
    • Does the low fuel warning indicator illuminate when triggered on, and turn off when triggered off? 

    Yes  : GO to F2.

    No  : GO to  F4.

  2. F2 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
    • Disconnect: Fuel Pump Gauge Sender C433.
    • Connect one lead of the instrument gauge system tester to the fuel pump gauge sender C433-2, circuit VMC11 (YE/VT), harness side and the other lead to the fuel pump gauge sender C433-1, circuit RMC32 (GN/BU), harness side.

    • Set the tester to 180 ohms and turn the tester ON.
    • Connect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
    • Key in ON position.

      Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read below E (Empty) when carrying out this test step.

    • Key in OFF position.

      Wait 30 seconds. Do not change the tool settings or the ignition switch position until 30 seconds have elapsed.

    • Set the tester to 15 ohms.
    • Key in ON position.

      Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read F (full) when carrying out this test step.

    • Key in OFF position.

      Wait 30 seconds. Do not change the tool settings or the ignition switch position until 30 seconds have elapsed.

    • Set the tester to 180 ohms.
    • Key in ON position.

      Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read F (full) when carrying out this test step.

    • Key in OFF position.
    • Does the fuel gauge and the low fuel warning indicator operate correctly? 

    Yes  : GO to F3.

    No  : If the fuel gauge does not operate correctly, GO to PINPOINT TEST B  to continue diagnosis of the fuel gauge.

    If the fuel gauge operates correctly and the low fuel warning indicator does not operate correctly, GO to  F4.

  3. F3 CHECK THE FUEL TANK 
    • Check the fuel tank for any damage or deformation.
    • Is the fuel tank OK? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new fuel pump gauge sender. REFER to FUEL TANK & LINES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No  : INSTALL a new fuel tank. REFER to FUEL TANK & LINES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. F4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
