Pinpoint Test F: The Low Fuel Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On (If Equipped)
- F1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
- Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command. Trigger the low fuel warning indicator active command on and off. Observe the low fuel warning indicator.
- Does the low fuel warning indicator illuminate when triggered on, and turn off when triggered off?
Yes : GO to F2.
No : GO to F4.
- F2 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Disconnect: Fuel Pump Gauge Sender C433.
- Connect one lead of the instrument gauge system tester to the fuel pump gauge sender C433-2, circuit VMC11 (YE/VT), harness side and the other lead to the fuel pump gauge sender C433-1, circuit RMC32 (GN/BU), harness side.
- Set the tester to 180 ohms and turn the tester ON.
- Connect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Key in ON position.
Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read below E (Empty) when carrying out this test step.
- Key in OFF position.
Wait 30 seconds. Do not change the tool settings or the ignition switch position until 30 seconds have elapsed.
- Set the tester to 15 ohms.
- Key in ON position.
Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read F (full) when carrying out this test step.
- Key in OFF position.
Wait 30 seconds. Do not change the tool settings or the ignition switch position until 30 seconds have elapsed.
- Set the tester to 180 ohms.
- Key in ON position.
Observe the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read F (full) when carrying out this test step.
- Key in OFF position.
- Does the fuel gauge and the low fuel warning indicator operate correctly?
Yes : GO to F3.
No : If the fuel gauge does not operate correctly, GO to PINPOINT TEST B to continue diagnosis of the fuel gauge.
If the fuel gauge operates correctly and the low fuel warning indicator does not operate correctly, GO to F4.
- F3 CHECK THE FUEL TANK
- Check the fuel tank for any damage or deformation.
- Is the fuel tank OK?
Yes : INSTALL a new fuel pump gauge sender. REFER to FUEL TANK & LINES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No : INSTALL a new fuel tank. REFER to FUEL TANK & LINES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- F4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
