Normal Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

As part of the SRS, the vehicle is equipped a deployable steering column. The restraints control module (RCM) will deploy (collapse) the steering column during a frontal collision when seat position information and other parameters reach predetermined limits. Refer to AIR BAG AND SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) .

The RCM checks the deployable steering column circuits for faults. If the RCM detects a short to voltage, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2985 in memory and flash lamp fault code (LFC 57) on the air bag indicator.
