Pinpoint Test W: The OVERTEMP Warning Indicator Is Inoperative

  1. W1 CHECK THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TESTS 
    • Check the PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM DTCs recorded? 

    Yes  : REFER to the INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ESCAPE & HYBRID MARINER article to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.

    No  : GO to W2.

  2. W2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PROVE-OUT 
    • Carry out the instrument cluster self-diagnostic test for the bulb check.
    • Observe the overtemp warning indicator.
    • Does the overtemp warning indicator illuminate? 

    Yes  : GO to  W4.

    No  : GO to W3.

  3. W3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  4. W4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
