Pinpoint Test A: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Illuminated Continuously - RCM Disconnected Or Inoperative, Loss Of Battery Feed Or Loss Of Signal Ground

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Remove restraint system diagnostic tools from the vehicle prior to road testing. If tools are not removed, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) device may not deploy in a crash. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash and possibly violate vehicle safety standards.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety belt pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when taking measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE: SRS components should only be disconnected or reconnected when instructed to do so within a pinpoint test step. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect diagnosis of the SRS.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the Pinpoint Test.
  1. A1 CHECK FOR CONTINUOUS OR ON-DEMAND DTCs
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test - RCM
    • Were any continuous memory or on-demand DTCs retrieved?
    1. YES  : If continuous memory DTCs were retrieved, go to  A2. If on-demand DTCs were retrieved, go to the SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  for pinpoint test direction.
    2. NO  : Go to  A2.
  2. A2 CHECK THE RCM CONNECTION
    1. YES  : Go to  A3.
    2. NO  : CONNECT C310a and ENGAGE the locking tab. Go to  A7.
  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUIT 937 (RD/WH) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Deactivate the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation .
    • Disconnect: RCM C310a and C310b
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 1: Measuring Voltage
      G03881123Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the voltage between RCM C310a-12, circuit 937 (RD/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY that Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 22 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 937 (RD/WH). Go to  A7.
  4. A4 CHECK FOR AN OPEN GROUND CIRCUIT
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between RCM C310a-16, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Is resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 676 (PK/OG). Go to  A7.
  5. A5 CHECK CIRCUIT 608 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: IC Module C2220
    • Fig 2: Measuring Resistance
      GF0013307Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between IC module C2220-12, circuit 608 (BK/YE), harness side and RCM C310a-15, circuit 608 (BK/YE), harness side.
    • Is resistance less than 0.5 ohm?
    1. YES  : Go to  A6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 608 (BK/YE). Go to  A7.
  6. A6 CHECK THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION (DRIVE INDICATOR OFF)
    • Connect: IC Module C2220
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 3: Connecting Fused Jumper Wire
      GF0013308Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Connect a fused jumper wire between RCM C310a-15, circuit 608 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.
    • Is the air bag warning indicator off ?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to Restraints Control Module (RCM) . Go to  A7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new IC module. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC), MESSAGE CENTER, & WARNING CHIMES article. Go to  A7.
  7. A7 CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL SRS DTCs
    • Key in OFF position.
WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    • Reconnect all SRS components (if previously disconnected).
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test - RCM
    • Are any on-demand DTCs retrieved?
    1. YES  : Do not clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. Go to the SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  for pinpoint test direction.
    2. NO  : CLEAR all RCM continuous memory DTCs. PROVE OUT the SRS. REPAIR is complete. RETURN the vehicle to the customer.
