PINPOINT TEST K: DTCs C1141 (LF), C1142 (RF), C1143 (RR), C1144 (LR), C1222, C1233 (LF), C1234 (RF), C1235 (RR) and C1236 (LR) - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TONE RING TOOTH MISSING FAULT/WHEEL SPEED INPUT SIGNAL MISSING

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Mercury Mariner and 2008 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
  1. K1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST 
    • Check the recorded results from the ABS self-test:
    • Are DTCs C1141, C1142, C1143 and/or C1144 present? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K3.
    2. NO  : If DTCs C1233, C1234, C1235 and/or C1236 are present, go to  K2.

      For all other DTCs, refer to ABS Module DTC Chart .

  2. K2 MONITOR THE WHEEL SPEED PARAMETER IDs (PIDs) 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: ABS Module PIDs
    • Monitor the ABS module wheel speed sensor PIDs while driving the vehicle at a constant speed.
    • Are all the wheel speed sensor PID values similar? 
    1. YES  : CLEAR the DTCs. DRIVE the vehicle. RETRIEVE the DTCs. If DTC C1233, C1234, C1235 or C1236 is present, go to  K13.
    2. NO  : Go to  K3.
  3. K3 INSPECT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR MOUNTING 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor for looseness.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor loose? 
    1. YES  : TIGHTEN the wheel speed sensor to specification. REFER to SPECIFICATIONS . CLEAR the DTCs. Go to  K4.
    2. NO  : Go to  K5.
  4. K4 RECHECK THE WHEEL SPEED PIDs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: ABS Module PIDs
    • Monitor the ABS module wheel speed sensor PIDs while driving the vehicle at a constant speed.
    • Are all the wheel speed sensor PID values similar? 
    1. YES  : The vehicle is OK. The concern may have been caused by a loose wheel speed sensor.
    2. NO  : Go to  K5.
  5. K5 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FOR DAMAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • NOTE: Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with a good light source. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire can lead to unnecessary installation of a new component.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor for general damage.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K6.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. K6 CHECK FOR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING DAMAGE 
    1. YES  : Go to  K7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor ring. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor Ring - Front  or Wheel Speed Sensor Ring - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. K7 CHECK FOR BEARING DAMAGE 
    • Inspect the wheel bearings for damage.
    • Are the wheel bearings OK? 
    1. YES  : If the active wheel speed sensor tool is available, go to  K8.

      If the active wheel speed sensor tool is not available, go to  K10.

    2. NO  : INSTALL new wheel bearings as necessary. REFER to FRONT SUSPENSION article for front wheel bearings or REAR SUSPENSION article for rear wheel bearings. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. K8 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT USING THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Connect the special tool to the wheel speed sensor connectors.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Select the correct system polarity on the special tool and turn the special tool power switch to the ON position.
    • Is the module output LED illuminated? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K9.
    2. NO  : Go to  K12.
  9. K9 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT WITH THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Raise the suspect wheel until it can spin freely. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • While monitoring the special tool, slowly spin the suspect wheel.
    • Do the sensor output LEDs illuminate and flash and is the current overload LED not illuminated? 
    1. YES  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : If the current level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs do not illuminate or if the current level LED is illuminated red, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front . For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

      If the current level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs illuminate green but do not flash, INSPECT the wheel speed sensor tone ring and INSTALL new if necessary. If the tone ring is OK, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front . For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  10. K10 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the suspect wheel speed sensor pins, harness side.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K11.
    2. NO  : Go to  K12.
  11. K11 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • For DTCs C1141 and C1233  , connect the meter between LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor pin 1, component side. Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor pin 2, component side.

    • For DTC C1142 and C1234  , connect the meter between LF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor pin 1, component side. Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LF wheel speed sensor C160-2, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor pin 2, component side.
    • For DTC C1143 and C1235  , connect the meter between RR wheel speed sensor C426-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and RR wheel speed sensor pin 1, component side. Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between RR wheel speed sensor C426-2, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and RR wheel speed sensor pin 2, component side.
    • For DTC C1144 and C1236  , connect the meter between LR wheel speed sensor C440-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LR wheel speed sensor pin 1, component side. Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LR wheel speed sensor C440-2, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LR wheel speed sensor pin 2, component side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the current while slightly rotating the wheel, using incremental turns.
    • Does the automotive meter switch between the low state (5 to 8 mA) and the high state (12 to 16 mA)? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K13.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  12. K12 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462
    • For DTC C1233  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-45, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-46, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side.

    • For DTC C1234  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-33, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-34, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-2, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side.

    • For DTC C1235  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-42, circuit RCA20 (BN), harness side and RR wheel speed sensor C426-2, circuit RCA20 (BN), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-43, circuit VCA06 (WH/OG), harness side and RR wheel speed sensor C426-1, circuit VCA06 (WH/OG), harness side.

    • For DTC C1236  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-36, circuit VCA04 (BU/OG), harness side and LR wheel speed sensor C440-1, circuit VCA04 (BU/OG), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-37, circuit RCA18 (BN/GN), harness side and LR wheel speed sensor C440-2, circuit RCA18 (BN/GN), harness side.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  K13.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. K13 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new hydraulic control unit (HCU). REFER to Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) - Hybrid . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
