Principles of Operation: Odometer

The vehicle odometer data is transmitted to the instrument cluster from the PCM. The odometer displays seven digits with the last digit in tenths of a unit. The odometer range is limited by instrument cluster memory space. The S symbol on the odometer indicates that the original odometer mileage is unknown. If the actual mileage can be verified, an authorized repair facility can program a new odometer to reflect the correct mileage. The message ERROR indicates that the instrument cluster cannot read a valid odometer memory from the non-volatile random access memory.
