Test E: Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

NOTE: Instrument cluster harness connector C266b must remain connected.
  1. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect a voltmeter between terminal "S"and terminal "G" on speedometer (back of instrument cluster). Place voltmeter in AC volts position. Drive vehicle and note speed to voltage readings. See SPEED-TO-VOLTAGE COMPARISON  table. If voltage readings are correct, replace speedometer. If readings are not correct, go to next step.

  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Verify 4 screws holding speedometer to instrument cluster printed circuit are securely fastened. Measure resistance between speedometer terminal "S" and terminal No. 3 (Pink/Blue wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. Measure resistance between speedometer terminal "G" and terminal No. 5 (Black/Red wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. Measure resistance between speedometer terminal "B" and terminal No. 2 (Blue wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistances is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. With ignition switch in LOCK position and instrument cluster still removed, disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C266b. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness connector C174. VSS is located in center of engine compartment. Measure resistance of Pink/Blue wire between terminal No. 1 at VSS harness connector C174 and terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Pink/Blue wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. Measure resistance of Black/Red wire between terminal No. 2 at VSS harness connector C174 and terminal No. 5 at instrument cluster harness connector C266b. If resistance readings are 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster and VSS, and greater than 10 k/ohms in Pink/Blue wire between ground and instrument cluster, replace VSS. If resistance readings are greater than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and VSS, or 10 k/ohms or less in Pink/Blue wire between ground and instrument cluster, repair open or high resistance in circuit(s) in question and retest system.
