Test E: Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

NOTE: Raise and support vehicle for this test. All instrument cluster connectors must remain connected.
  1. Access rear of instrument panel. DO NOT disconnect any connectors. Measure voltage by backprobing between terminal No. 3 (Pink/Blue wire) at instrument cluster connector C267A and terminal No. 4 (Black/Red wire) at instrument cluster connector C267B. See Figure and Figure . Start engine. Raise vehicle speed and note speed to voltage readings. With engine running at speeds indicated, verify corresponding voltage readings. See SPEED-TO-VOLTAGE COMPARISON  table. If voltage readings are correct, replace instrument cluster. If readings are not correct, go to next step.
    SPEED-TO-VOLTAGE COMPARISON

Speed - MPH (KM/H) Approximate Volts
    0 (0) 0
    5 (8) 0.5
    10 (16) 1.0

    55 (88) 4.2
    60 (96) 4.4
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C267A and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector. VSS is located in center of engine compartment. Measure resistance of Pink/Blue wire between terminal No. 1 at Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector and terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster connector C267A. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Pink/Blue wire) at instrument cluster connector C267A. See Figure. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and VSS, and more than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground. If both resistances are as specified, go to next step. If either resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Pink/Blue wire.
  3. Measure resistance of Black/Red wire between VSS connector and instrument cluster connector C267A terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace VSS. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Red wire.
