Test W: O/D Off Light Never/Always On

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester or equivalent scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Access Overdrive Switch (ODS) STS and OD ENA PIDs. Using NGS tester set ODS to off and ensure OD ENA signal turns off (O/D OFF light on instrument cluster illuminates). Hold ODS button in and ensure ODS STS signal is turns on. If all conditions are as described, replace TCM. Retest system. If conditions are not as described, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM. TCM is located in bottom of center console. Install EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box (007-00033) following manufacturer's instructions leaving TCM disconnected. Disconnect overdrive off switch connector. Overdrive off switch is located at top of steering column near gear selector. Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 18 and overdrive off switch connector Green/Orange wire. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and breakout box pin No. 18. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistance measurements are as specified, go to next step. If resistance measurements are not as specified, repair Green/Orange wire. Retest system.
  3. Check for continuity between Green/Orange wire terminal and Black wire terminal of overdrive off switch connector. If continuity exists when overdrive off switch is depressed and no continuity when released, go to next step. If continuity is not as described, replace overdrive off switch. Retest system.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect overdrive off switch connector. Measure resistance between ground and overdrive off switch connector Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire. Retest system.
  5. With EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box still connected to TCM, turn ignition on. Connect jumper wire between ground and breakout box pin No. 19. If O/D OFF light illuminates, replace TCM. Retest system. If O/D OFF light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove O/D OFF light bulb. Test continuity of bulb. Replace bulb if necessary. Retest system. If bulb is okay, go to next step.
  7. With EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box still connected to TCM, disconnect instrument cluster connector C268. See Figure -Figure . Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 17 and instrument cluster connector C268 terminal No. 7 (Black/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Orange wire. Retest system.
  8. Measure resistance between ground and breakout box pin No. 17. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Orange wire. Retest system.
