Test D: Fuel Gauge Always Reads Full

  1. Test fuel gauge, see FUEL GAUGE under COMPONENT TESTING  . If fuel gauge tests okay, go to next step. If fuel gauge is faulty, replace fuel gauge and indicator module. Retest system.
  2. Test fuel sending unit, see FUEL SENDING UNIT  under COMPONENT TESTING. If fuel sending unit tests okay, go to next step. If fuel sending unit is faulty, replace fuel sending unit. Retest system.
  3. Disconnect fuel sending unit connector. Measure resistance between ground and fuel sending unit connector Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. Retest system.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C270. Measure resistance of Blue/Red wire between instrument cluster connector C270 terminal No. 3 and fuel sending unit connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Blue/Red wire. Retest system.
  5. Reconnect instrument cluster connector C270. Remove fuel indicator module from back of instrument cluster. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fuel indicator module connector terminal No. 2. See Figure - Figure . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to TEST A: step 4). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and fuel indicator module connector terminal No. 3. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to TEST A: step 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Measure resistance between instrument cluster and fuel gauge or indicator module as indicated. See PRINTED CIRCUIT TEST POINTS  table. If resistance in all measurements are 5 ohms or less, replace fuel pump indicator module. Retest system. If resistance of any measurement is more than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
