Pinpoint Test G - Speedometer Reads Zero Or Indication Varies Erratically

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Leave connectors connected. Set voltmeter on AC scale. Connect voltmeter between instrument cluster connector C2, pin No. 4 (Black/Red wire) and C3 pin No. 3 (Pink/Blue wire). Drive vehicle while observing voltmeter. Voltmeter AC readings should be as follows:
    • At 5 MPH, voltmeter should read 0.5 volts
    • At 10 MPH, voltmeter should read 1.0 volts
    • At 15 MPH, voltmeter should read 1.6 volts
    • At 20 MPH, voltmeter should read 2.0 volts
    • At 25 MPH, voltmeter should read 2.4 volts
    • At 30 MPH, voltmeter should read 2.8 volts
    • At 35 MPH, voltmeter should read 3.1 volts
    • At 40 MPH, voltmeter should read 3.4 volts
    • At 45 MPH, voltmeter should read 3.6 volts
    • At 50 MPH, voltmeter should read 3.9 volts
    • At 55 MPH, voltmeter should read 4.2 volts
    • At 60 MPH, voltmeter should read 4.4 volts

    If voltage readings are as specified, replace instrument cluster. If voltage readings are not as specified, go to next step.

  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) wiring harness connector. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors C2 and C3. Measure resistance of the Pink/Blue wire between C3 connector pin No. 3, and VSS wire harness connector Pink/Blue wire terminal. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C2, pin No. 4 (Black/Red wire) and VSS wire harness connector Black/Red wire terminal. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance of the Pink/Blue wire between ground and C3 connector pin No. 3. Resistance should be more than 10,000 ohms. If resistances are as specified, replace VSS. If resistances are not as specified, repair faulty circuit.
