Speed Control System - Inspection & Verification

  1. Verify customer concern by operating the speed control system
  2. Visually inspect the following components of the speed control system. See VISUAL INSPECTION CHART  .

    Mechanical Electrical
    Vacuum Leaks At Speed Control Servo Blown Fuse: 10A RLY COIL
    Incorrect Speed Control Actuator Adjustment Loose Or Corroded Connections
    Damaged Or Binding Speed Control Actuator Damaged Wiring Harness
    Damaged Or Misadjusted Brake Pedal Damaged, Broken or Improperly Adjusted Switc(es)
    Damaged Or Misadjusted Transmission Range Switch Damaged Or Corroded Relays
    Damaged Speed Control Servo
  3. Exercise the accelerator pedal. Check the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator for freedom and proper adjustment.
  4. Check the vacuum hose at the speed control servo for cracks, kinks, and/or blockage.
  5. Check the wiring harness for obvious signs of shorts, opens, bad connections, or damage.
  6. Verify that the speedometer, horn, and stoplamps function properly.
  7. Road test the vehicle to check the speed control system performance.
    8. WARNING: If the speed control system goes out of control or over-speed during the road test, be prepared to turn off the system with the speed control actuator switch (cruise cont.) off or the ignition switch.
  8. Start the engine.
  9. Turn the speed control actuator switch ON.
  10. Accelerate the vehicle and hold it at 35 mph (56 km/h).
  11. Press and release the COAST SET button. The vehicle should maintain a constant 35 mph (56 km/h).
  12. Press the speed control actuator switch OFF. The speed control should shut off and the vehicle should start to slow down.
  13. Accelerate the vehicle to 35 mph (56 km/h).
  14. Turn the speed control actuator switch ON.
  15. Press the COAST SET button.
  16. Press and hold the RES ACCEL button, and ease off the accelerator pedal. The vehicle's speed should gradually increase.
  17. When the vehicle's speed reaches 50 mph (80 km/h), release the RES ACCEL button. The vehicle should maintain a steady 50 mph (80 km/h).
  18. Press and hold the COAST SET button. The vehicle's speed should slowly decrease.
  19. Release the COAST SET button at 35 mph (56 km/h). The vehicle should maintain a steady speed at 35 mph (56 km/h) when the COAST SET button was released.
  20. Press the RES ACCEL button and hold it until the vehicle reaches 50 mph (80 km/h).
  21. Press and release the brake pedal. The speed control system should shut off and the engine should decrease in speed. Slow the vehicle down to 35 mph (56 km/h).
  22. Press and release the RES ACCEL button. The vehicle's speed should increase to 50 mph (80 km/h).
  23. Depress the brake pedal and start to slow the vehicle down.
  24. Press the CANCEL button.
  25. Press and release the RES ACCEL button. The vehicle should not return to the set speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).
  26. Press and release the speed control actuator switch.
