Low Oil Level/Check Oil

The LOW OIL indicator illuminates when the ignition switch is in the START position to test the bulb. During this time, the low oil level relay uses an input from the low oil level sensor to determine if the oil is low (switch grounded) or not low (switch not grounded). If the oil level is adequate, the indicator turns off when the ignition switch is released to the RUN position. If the oil level is low (approximately 1.5 quarts [1.4 liters] or less) the low oil level relay grounds the Black/Yellow wire to turn on the lamp.

The lamp remains on until the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. After the ignition switch is turned OFF, five minutes pass before the low oil level relay takes a new reading. This delay allows time for oil drain-back to prevent false readings. If the engine is restarted during this five minute period, the last reading is indicated. See Figure .
