Instrument Panels - Electronic: Operation: Gauges: Speedometer
The speedometer is controlled by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The VSS generates a sine wave with a frequency proportional to vehicle speed. This signal is sent to the speedometer assembly via the Pink/Blue wire. The solid state electronics convert this sine wave signal into a digital signal, which is used to control the speedometer and odometer. This signal is also sent to the PCM. The speedometer portion of the display consists of three digits which indicate vehicle speed. Either the English or metric mode can be selected by pressing the ENG/MET button on the fuel computer control panel. The selected mode will be displayed in either the mph or km/h legends and will be the same at power up as it was at power down. The maximum vehicle speed that will be displayed is 168 km/h (105 mph). If actual vehicle speed exceeds this value, the selected maximum value will flash. The speedometer typically displays consecutive numbers during slow acceleration or deceleration, and skips consecutive numbers during quick acceleration or deceleration.
