Instrument Cluster & Panel Lighting
The analog instrument cluster contains an analog speedometer and tachometer. The right hand side of the instrument cluster contains the swing/point analog fuel level and temperature gauges. Directly beneath these gauges are the odometer, the trip odometer, and the trip odometer reset button. The warning/indicator lamps and the PRNDL indicator are located along the bottom of the cluster. The right hand and left hand signal indicators flank the speedometer at the top of the cluster.
The analog instrument cluster illumination and the instrument panel illumination are controlled by the instrument panel dimmer switch, located on the left hand side of the instrument cluster bezel, and by the timer module. The timer module is mounted beneath the inertia fuel shutoff switch. When either side of the dimmer switch is pressed, an electronic signal is sent to the timer module which then outputs voltage to the instrument cluster and panel illumination lamps. The voltage range is from 0.2 volts (brightest) to 9.0 volts (dimmest). However, the dimmer switch does not control the glove compartment or the ash receptacle illumination lamps.
The diode junction box, located behind the instrument cluster, protects the instrument cluster circuitry by allowing current to flow in only one direction.
The analog instrument cluster and the instrument panel will not illuminate when the headlamp switch is in the OFF position.
When the ignition is turned to the ON position, the following warning lamps will prove out by momentarily lighting:
- Charge warning
- Safety belt
- Brake system
- Oil pressure
- Low oil
- Anti-lock brake
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (CHECK ENGINE Lamp)
- Overdrive off
