Engine Notes: Notes
1962-65 COOLANT LOSS OR WATER PUMP & FRONT COVER CORROSION CORRECTION: May be caused by erosion or corrosion of aluminum water pump and front cover. To correct, replace pump and front cover with a cast iron pump and cover. When installing cast iron front cover, be sure oil fill inlet passage on front face of cylinder block is plugged and new left hand valve rocker cover with oil fill pipe is installed.
1962-65 OIL & VACUUM LEAK AT INTAKE MANIFOLD & END SEALS CORRECTION: To correct oil and vacuum leaks, install new type cork Neoprene impregnated manifold gaskets and seals. This gasket has changed contours, port openings and thickness. Follow standard installation procedure and be sure to torque to 20-22 ft. lbs.
1963-65 ENGINE KNOCK CORRECTION: May be caused by excessive camshaft endplay. To correct, install camshaft thrust plate to reduce endplay to.001-.003".
One is for use with nylon camshaft sprockets, and the other is for use with cast iron sprockets. DO NOT interchange these thrust plates. Thrust plates used with cast iron sprockets must be installed with oil grooves facing forward to provide correct lubrication.
1965 ENGINE OVERHEATING CORRECTION: May be caused by coolant loss through distorted radiator filler neck cam lock flange. To correct, straighten cam lock flange with pliers to vertical position.
1965 289" ENGINE DELAYED OIL PRESSURE BUILDUP CORRECTION: If the oil pressure does not raise to normal or if the oil pressure indicator light does not go out in a reasonable length of time (approximately 5 seconds), it may be caused by a leaky oil filter anti-drain back valve, allowing the oil to drain back out of the filter after engine shut-down.
To correct, remove and discard the oil filter assembly, then remove filter insert from cylinder block. Apply a coating of oil resistant sealer on the insert-to-engine sealing surface. Reinstall oil filter insert and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. Install new service oil filter assembly.
1965 289" ENGINES ROCKER ARM & PUSHROD NOISE CORRECTION: May be caused by insufficient oil flow (obstructed oil passage) in pushrod, or a defective oil metering valve in hydraulic lifter. To correct, be sure oil flow through pushrod is not obstructed (with engine running wipe rocker arm weep hole). If oil flow is questionable and rocker arm is not at fault, remove hydraulic lifter.
1966-67 ENGINE REMOVAL CAUTION: Before raising or moving any engine equipped with an accelerator linkage stabilizer rod, rod should be disconnected.
1966 289" ENGINE CAMSHAFT NOISE CORRECTION: Excessive camshaft endplay can cause a knocking noise at low engine RPM. Correct by installing oversize camshaft thrust plate to reduce endplay to.001"-.003". Thrust plates used with nylon sprockets have oil grooves on both sides. Plate used with cast iron sprockets have grooves on one side only. Install with grooves facing forward.
1966-67 289" ENGINE CAMSHAFT ENDPLAY CHECKING CAUTION: Sprocket may break if camshaft is pried back and forth to check endplay. Back off rocker arm adjusting nuts to relieve pressure so that camshaft can be moved by hand.
1966 289" ENGINE ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY CAUTION: Whenever individually mounted rocker arms are assembled, the valve stem tip, fulcrum seat area, and pushrod socket should be lubricated with lubriplate or equivalent.
