Section 2748 (Engine Mechanical - 6.8L (3V) -- F250-F550 Super Duty): Removal: Engine: Removal

All vehicles
- Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL .
- Remove the engine cooling module. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
- Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .
- Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
- Remove the PCM. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector located below the PCM.
- Remove the accessory drive belt from the engine.
- Disconnect the degas bottle coolant outlet hose and the lower radiator hose.
- Disconnect the generator wiring harness position retainers from the engine front cover studs.
- Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the 2 A/C compressor manifold tube assemblies from the A/C compressor.
- Discard the O-rings seals.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and position the generator wiring harness aside.
- Remove the bolt and the transmission fluid level indicator tube.
Manual transmission equipped vehicles
- Remove the clutch and pressure plate. For additional information, refer to

Automatic transmission equipped vehicles
- Remove the 2 bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.
All automatic transmission equipped vehicles
- Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES .
- Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
- Remove the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
- Discard the nuts.
- Install the Torque Converter Retainer.
- Loosen the 2 transmission rear mount nuts.
- Remove the 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-downpipe nuts.
All vehicles
- If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt and the transmission wiring harness support bracket.
- Remove the nut and the 2 engine wiring harness ground straps.
- Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside.
- Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
- Remove the nut, the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket from the engine front cover stud bolt.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the A/C compressor.
- Disconnect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) wiring harness retainers.
- Disconnect the 2 HO2S electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the heater coolant hose from the heater coolant tube.
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
- Disconnect the oil cooler coolant hoses.
- Remove the threaded insert and the oil cooler. Inspect the engine oil cooler.
- Remove and discard the LH engine support insulator through bolt.
- Remove and discard the RH engine support insulator through bolt.
All automatic transmission vehicles
- Remove the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.
All vehicles
- Install the Engine Lifting Bracket and support the engine with a suitable floor crane.
All automatic transmission vehicles
- Support the transmission with a jack.
All vehicles
- Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
NOTE:
The upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.

NOTE:
If metal foreign material is present in the oil cooler, mechanical concerns exist. To diagnose mechanical concerns, refer to
ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION
. If the mechanical concern is not diagnosed and repaired, engine failure may occur.
