Condition Possible Sources Action
  • No boost/low boost/lack of power
  • Restriction upstream of the turbocharger compressor
  • REMOVE the restriction.
 
  • Turbocharger compressor air intake hose collapsed
  • REPAIR or INSTALL a new hose as required.
 
  • Damaged charge air cooler (CAC)
 
  • Partially blocked CAC (engine oil).
 
  • Turbocharger compressor manifold hoses leaking
  • TIGHTEN the hose clamps.
 
  • Loose connections or damage to air intake hoses and tubes
  • TIGHTEN the hose clamps. INSPECT for damage and REPAIR as necessary.
 
  • Turbocharger turbine or compressor wheel damage
 
  • Turbocharger bearings seized
 
  • Exhaust leak between manifold and turbine housing
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Low compression
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Stuck high-pressure turbine vane or turbocharger actuator assembly
  • Key Off, MOVE the turbocharger actuator assembly linkage through its full range of motion. CHECK for sticking or binding. REPAIR as necessary.
 
  • Turbocharger actuator linkage dislodged from high-pressure turbo actuator arm
  • Visually INSPECT the turbocharger actuator linkage to variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) arm. REPAIR as necessary.
 
  • Restricted flow through the EGR coolers due to coolant intrusion
  • REMOVE the EGR cooler outlet temperature sensor and INSPECT for signs of coolant. If coolant is present, REMOVE the vertical cooler from the horizontal cooler and INSPECT for signs of coolant. If coolant is present, REMOVE the horizontal cooler and pressure test. REFER to ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL article. INSPECT for blockage or coolant intrusion. REPAIR as necessary.
  • Excessive oil consumption (blue or gray exhaust smoke)
  • Incorrect type or grade of oil
  • DRAIN and FILL with specified oil.
 
  • Extended oil change intervals
  • CHANGE oil as recommended.
 
  • Clogged air cleaner element
 
  • Restriction upstream of the turbocharger compressor
  • REMOVE the restriction.
 
  • Turbocharger oil seals leaking
 
  • Restricted breather system
  • INSPECT the breather system. REPAIR as necessary.
  • Noise or vibration
  • Loose connections or damage to air intake hoses and tubes
  • TIGHTEN hose clamps. INSPECT for damage and REPAIR as necessary.
 
  • Air leaks at intake manifold or CAC
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Leaks at turbocharger inlet and outlet connections
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Exhaust leaks at turbocharger housing, exhaust manifolds, turbocharger inlet pipes
  • INSPECT for leaks. Leaks can usually be detected audibly or visually, by a discoloration caused by escaping hot exhaust gases. REPAIR as required.
 
  • Turbine bearing failure
 
  • Turbocharger low-pressure/high-pressure seal
  • Turbocharger crossover tube seals
  • Turbocharger compressor housing seals
  • CAC leaks at connections
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Turbocharger actuator cooling malfunction (air in the system)
  • High boost
  • Leak in exhaust system before DPF
  • REPAIR as required.
 
  • Turbocharger actuator linkage dislodged from high-pressure turbo actuator arm
  • Visually INSPECT the turbocharger actuator linkage-to-VGT arm. REPAIR as necessary.
 
  • Stuck high-pressure turbine vane or turbocharger actuator assembly
  • Key off, MOVE the turbocharger actuator assembly linkage through its full range of motion. CHECK for sticking or binding. REPAIR as necessary.
