Oil Pan: Removal

All vehicles
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
- Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
- Remove the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
- Remove the throttle body (TB) spacer. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
- Install the special tools.
- Remove and discard the oil filter.
- Drain the engine oil.
- If equipped, loosen the fitting and position the engine oil cooler aside.
- Remove the nut, the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket from the engine front cover stud bolt.
- Remove the nut and disconnect the fuel tube bracket.
- Detach the fuel supply tube and the fuel vapor tube from the position retainer at the rear of the engine.
- Remove the rear transmission insulator nuts.
- If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.
- Remove and discard the 2 exhaust Y-pipe flange bolts and nuts.
- Remove the 7 engine support insulator-to-crossmember nuts.
- Discard the 7 nuts.
- Using the special tools, raise the engine assembly.
- Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the transmission wiring harness retainers and route the wiring harness over the top of the transmission and out of the way.
- For early build vehicles, remove the bolts and the remote filter bracket.
- For late build vehicles, remove the flexplate inspection cover.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the inspection cover.
- Install a suitable transmission jack and raise the transmission.
- Remove the 18 bolts and partially lower the oil pan.
- Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen cover and pickup tube into the oil pan.
- Remove the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
- Discard the oil pan gasket.
- Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
- Remove 18 oil pan bolts and position the oil pan onto the crossmember.
- Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.
- Position the oil pan onto the engine and install 1 bolt at the front and 1 bolt at the rear of the oil pan to hold it in position.
- Using the special tools, align the engine support insulator studs and lower the engine.
- Remove the flywheel. For additional information, refer to Flywheel .
- Remove the rear engine cover.
- Remove the 2 bolts, the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
- Discard the oil pan gasket.
- Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
Automatic transmission equipped vehicles
NOTE:
The transmission insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the nuts. Install the studs if the studs come out of the insulator.
NOTE:
Some vehicles are equipped with a catalytic converter delete pipe instead of a catalytic converter.
