Oil Pan: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  4. Remove the throttle body (TB) spacer. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
  5. Install the special tools.

  7. Remove and discard the oil filter.

  9. Drain the engine oil.
  10. If equipped, loosen the fitting and position the engine oil cooler aside.

  12. Remove the nut, the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket from the engine front cover stud bolt.

    Automatic transmission equipped vehicles 

  14. Remove the nut and disconnect the fuel tube bracket.

  16. Detach the fuel supply tube and the fuel vapor tube from the position retainer at the rear of the engine.

    NOTE: The transmission insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the nuts. Install the studs if the studs come out of the insulator.
  18. Remove the rear transmission insulator nuts.

  20. If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

    NOTE: Some vehicles are equipped with a catalytic converter delete pipe instead of a catalytic converter.
  22. Remove and discard the 2 exhaust Y-pipe flange bolts and nuts.

    All vehicles 

    NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
  24. Remove the 7 engine support insulator-to-crossmember nuts.
    • Discard the 7 nuts.

  26. Using the special tools, raise the engine assembly.

    Automatic transmission equipped vehicles 

  28. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.

  30. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  32. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness retainers and route the wiring harness over the top of the transmission and out of the way.
  33. For early build vehicles, remove the bolts and the remote filter bracket.

  35. For late build vehicles, remove the flexplate inspection cover.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the inspection cover.

    NOTE: Support the transmission on the oil pan rails only or internal transmission damage can occur.
  37. Install a suitable transmission jack and raise the transmission.
  38. Remove the 18 bolts and partially lower the oil pan.
  39. Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen cover and pickup tube into the oil pan.
  40. Remove the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
    • Discard the oil pan gasket.
    • Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
  41. Manual transmission equipped vehicles 

  42. Remove 18 oil pan bolts and position the oil pan onto the crossmember.
  43. Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.
  44. Position the oil pan onto the engine and install 1 bolt at the front and 1 bolt at the rear of the oil pan to hold it in position.
  45. Using the special tools, align the engine support insulator studs and lower the engine.

  47. Remove the flywheel. For additional information, refer to Flywheel .
  48. Remove the rear engine cover.
  49. Remove the 2 bolts, the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
    • Discard the oil pan gasket.
    • Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
