Oil Pan: Installation

All vehicles 

    NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
  1. Inspect the oil pan. Clean the mating surface for the oil pan with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. NOTE: Make sure to install a new O-ring seal. A missing or damaged O-ring seal can cause foam in the lubrication system and low oil pressure. Failure to follow this instruction may result in engine damage.
    NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  3. Install a new O-ring seal onto the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
  4. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube in the oil pan and position the oil pan and new gasket into the vehicle.
  5. Manual transmission equipped vehicles 

  6. Position the oil pan onto the engine and install one bolt at the front of the engine and one bolt at the rear of the oil pan to hold it in position.
  7. Install the rear engine cover.
  8. Install the flywheel. For additional information, refer to Flywheel .
  9. Using the special tools, raise the engine.

  11. Remove the 2 bolts and lower the oil pan.
  12. All vehicles 

    NOTE: Make sure to install a new O-ring seal. A missing or damaged O-ring seal can cause foam in the lubrication system and low oil pressure. Failure to follow this instruction may result in engine damage.
    NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  13. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolts.
    • Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
    • Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  14. NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
  15. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block sealing surface.

    NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
  17. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surface.

  19. Position the oil pan gasket and the oil pan and loosely install the 18 bolts.
  20. Tighten the bolts in 3 stages, in the sequence shown.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.

    Automatic transmission equipped vehicles 

  22. Lower the transmission and remove the jack.
  23. For late build vehicles, install the flexplate inspection cover.
    1. Position the flexplate inspection cover.
    2. Install the bolts.
      • Tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).

  25. For early build vehicles, install the remote filter bracket and the bolts.
    • Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

    All vehicles 

  27. Using the special tools, align the engine support insulator studs and lower the engine.

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.
  29. Install 4 new RH engine support insulator nuts.
    • Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.
  31. Install 3 new LH engine support insulator nuts.
    • Tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).

    Automatic transmission equipped vehicles 

  33. Route the wiring harness over the top of the transmission and connect the wiring harness retainers.
  34. Connect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  36. Connect the TSS sensor electrical connector.

    NOTE: Some vehicles are equipped with a catalytic converter delete pipe instead of a catalytic converter.
  38. Install 2 new exhaust Y-pipe flange bolts and nuts.

  40. If equipped, position the skid plate and install the bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  42. Attach the fuel supply tube and the fuel vapor tube to the position retainer at the rear of the engine.

  44. Connect the fuel tube bracket and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

  46. Install the rear transmission insulator nuts.
    • Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

    All vehicles 

  48. Position the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket onto the engine front cover stud bolt and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  50. If equipped, position the engine oil cooler and tighten the fitting.
    • Tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb-ft).
  51. Install a new oil filter.
    • Tighten to 16 Nm (12 lb-ft).
  52. Remove the throttle body (TB) spacer. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
  53. Install the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  54. Install the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  55. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil.
