Section 2100 (Engine - 5.4L (3V) -- F-250 & F350 Super Duty): Removal: Engine

Retainer, Torque Converter 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) or equivalent

All vehicles 

  1. Release the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL article.
  2. Remove the engine cooling module. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  3. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold .
  4. Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  5. Remove the PCM. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
  6. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  7. Disconnect the lower radiator hose to the oil filter adapter.

  9. Disconnect the degas bottle coolant hose.

  11. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector located below the PCM.

  13. Disconnect the generator wiring harness position retainers from the engine front cover studs.

  15. Disconnect the A/C compressor and crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connectors and position the generator wiring harness aside.

  17. Remove the bolt and the transmission fluid level indicator tube.

  19. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the 2 A/C compressor manifold tube assemblies from the A/C compressor.
    • Discard the O-rings seals.

  21. Disconnect the coolant hose from the coolant tube.

    Manual transmission equipped vehicles 

  23. Remove the clutch and pressure plate. For additional information, refer to CLUTCH article.
  24. Early build automatic transmission equipped vehicles 

  25. Remove the 2 transmission auxiliary fluid cooler outlet tube secondary latches.

  27. Using the special tool, disconnect the 2 transmission auxiliary fluid cooler inlet tubes.

  29. Disconnect the 2 transmission auxiliary fluid cooler outlet tubes.

  31. Remove the 2 bolts and the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler assembly.

  33. Remove the 2 bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.

  35. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
  36. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.

  38. Remove the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
    • Discard the nuts.

  40. Install the special tool.

  42. Loosen the 2 transmission rear mount nuts.

    NOTE: The upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.
  44. Remove the 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  46. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.

  48. Remove the bolt and the transmission wiring harness support bracket.

  50. Remove the nut and the 2 engine wiring harness ground straps.

  52. Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside.

  54. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump aside.

  56. Remove the nut, the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket from the engine front cover stud bolt.

  58. Remove the 3 bolts and the A/C compressor.

  60. Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring harness retainers.

  62. Disconnect the 2 HO2S electrical connectors.

  64. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold flange nuts.

  66. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

  68. Disconnect the oil cooler coolant hoses.

    CAUTION: If metal foreign material is present in the oil cooler, mechanical concerns exist. To diagnose mechanical concerns, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  70. Remove and inspect the engine oil cooler.

  72. Remove the LH engine support insulator through bolt.

  76. Remove the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  78. Install the special tool.

  80. Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
