Axles And Suspension - SN32.00-P-0001-01J
Model 223
except code ME10 (Hybrid vehicle (plug-in, PHEV))
Suspension and damping
The suspension and damping system AIRMATIC with code 489 is standard equipment, as in the previous series. AIRMATIC forms the basis for the special equipment E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL with code 490.
AIRMATIC
AIRMATIC has the following new functions:
- Quicker lowering and lifting through the open air supply and control of the new air suspension system in a controller unit.
- Automatic lowering at higher speeds; thus, reduction of consumption.
- More vehicle dynamics through automatic lowering function in combination with the Sport drive program.
- Option of setting an increased driving level up to 60 km/h (ground clearance independent of load).
For more detailed descriptions, see function description GF32.22-P-1000A "air suspension basic function".
E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL
The special equipment E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL offers even more ride comfort and agility, as well as entirely new functions. It is a fully active suspension, which is combined with AIRMATIC air suspension. It enables individual regulation of the spring and damper forces on each wheel. Thus, EACTIVE BODY CONTROL counters not only rolling motions, but also pitching and lifting motions. In combination with the function of the road recording (ROAD SURFACE SCAN) and the curve inclination function (CURVE), E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL provides a high level of comfort.
Special features:
- 48 V based fully active electrohydraulic suspension
- Air suspension system
- Automatic level control system depending on speed and drive program
- Load detection
- "DYNAMIC SELECT" drive programs "Comfort", "Sport", "Curve" and "ECO".
For more detailed descriptions, see function description "electrohydraulic suspension basic function".

DYNAMIC SELECT
The new S-Class model 223 also enables the driver, with the help of DYNAMIC SELECT, to modify the following vehicle characteristics:
- Drive (engine and transmission management)
- Chassis
- Steering
- ESP®
Unlike the previous model, the selection is made using the DYNAMIC SELECT button in the switch panel below the central display.
The system is offered as standard equipment for vehicles with front and rear air suspension with code 489 (AIRMATIC) or for vehicles with optional electrohydraulic suspension with code 490 (E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL). The driver can select between various pre-configured and one individual drive program. Depending on the drive type, the chassis variant and other vehicle equipment, up to six drive programs can be selected. The basic setting is the drive program "Comfort."
The following DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs are available depending on the vehicle equipment:
- Comfort: comfortable and consumption-optimized driving
- Individual: individual settings
- Sport: sporty driving with lowering
- Sport +: sporty driving with lowering
- ECO: particularly consumption-optimized driving
- CURVE: comfortable driving with curve inclination function (vehicles with electrohydraulic suspension)
To briefly shift exclusively via the steering wheel gearshift paddles, the driver can change directly into manual mode, independent of the drive programs, via the "M" button. A permanent setting is made as follows:
- Switch to the drive program "Individual"
- Select the drive setting "M"
