Charge Air Cooling, Basic Function - GF09.41-P-1000A

Engine all (4xWD)

Engine all (CAR)

Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The charge air cooler cools down the charge air heated up by compression. This improves the cylinder volumetric efficiency and reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx ) as a result of the lower exhaust temperatures. Charge air coolers are designed as heat exchangers.

Direct charge air cooling (air-to-air cooling)

The charge air gives up its heat to the air stream passed through the charge air cooler, which is located directly downstream of the turbocharger. Fans support the charge air cooler in cooling the charge air.

Indirect charge air cooling (air-to-water cooling)

With indirect charge air cooling, the charge air is cooled by the coolant in the low-temperature circuit. The charge air cooler is cooled indirectly by the ambient air and the coolant contained in the low-temperature coolant circuit.

IMPORTANT Charge air coolers that are cooled by coolant have a high output density. The installation location in the engine compartment can be freely selected due to their compact design.
