The tire pressure changes by approximately 0.1 bar for each 10°C change in air temperature. Example:
Outside temperature = 20°C
Tire temperature = 40°C
Tire pressure 0.2 bar higher than specified in the tire pressure table.
Off-road vehicles and cars
The trend in recent years toward wider and flatter tire section widths and run-flat tires has made the mounting and removal of tires increasingly complex.
Essential requirements for trouble-free use and smooth operation of a tire are its correct mounting and seating on the rim.
To ensure this, the upper sidewalls and the upper raised beads on the inside, in particular, must have a temperature of at least 15°C.
Rubber is a poor thermal conductor; for this reason, a cold tire must be located in a temperature-controlled environment for an adequately long period of time until the inner rubber layers have warmed up to at least 15°C.
The room temperature is measured and read off at eye level. A temperature of 19°C at eye level would mean a temperature of approx. 16°C at ground level. Assuming a room temperature of at least 19 C:
- Store tires with initial temperature of 0°C and higher for at least 2 h.
- Store tires with initial temperature of below 0°C for at least 2.5 h.
Do not place cold tires directly on the ground for warming them up; place them on an insulated mat, a pallet or on something even higher.
To make sure that cold tires absorb heat from the ambient air as quickly as possible, they should not be stacked up, but stored separately.
Apart from using warm recirculated air (max. 50°C), there is no other procedure for heating up the tires without causing damage to them.
Tires should never be exposed to a radiant heater or a hot air blower for the purpose of heating them up.
This can result in damage-causing surface temperatures being reached very quickly.
Tire systems
- MO stands for Mercedes Original tires.
- MOE stands for Mercedes Original Extended run-flat tires. This is a tire with a reinforced side wall. In the event of pressure loss, the weight on the wheel is supported allowing the vehicle to be driven further under certain restrictions.
- PAX system is a complete wheel/tire system, consisting of a tire, a rim and an internal support ring. A self-clamping stay holds the tire on the rim. In case of loss of air, a support ring made of rubber carries the vehicle weight.
- CSR system stands for Conti Support Ring. A support ring (made of steel) with flexible padding is mounted on a standard rim together with a standard tire. The support ring prevents the tire from getting detached from the rim in the event of loss of air.
