Transmission - Diesel Engines

All vehicles 

  1. Pull the shift lever boot upward to access the shift housing.

  3. Loosen the upper gearshift lever bolt, then remove the upper gear shift lever.

  5. Remove the 2 screws and the lower shift lever boot.

  7. Remove the 4 shift housing bolts and the shift housing.

    Vehicles with a manual shift transfer case 

  9. Shift the transfer case into 4H.
  10. Working under the vehicle, remove the 2 bolts that attach the shift lever to the transfer case control lever assembly. Disconnect the transmission-to-transfer case linkage.

    All vehicles 

  12. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  13. If the transmission is being disassembled, drain the transmission fluid.
  14. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft to the transfer case flange. Remove and discard the driveshaft bolts.
  15. Disconnect the rear driveshaft and position it aside. Support the driveshaft.

  17. Remove the skid plate, if equipped.
  18. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE article.
  19. Remove the power take-off (PTO) equipment, if equipped.
  20. Using the special tool, support the transmission.
    • Securely strap the jack to the transmission.
  21. Remove the 4 RH crossmember nuts.

  23. Remove the 3 LH crossmember nuts.

  25. Disconnect the wire harness from the crossmember.
  26. Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.

  28. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.

  30. Disconnect wiring harness from the transmission.
  31. Remove the clutch slave cylinder and position it aside.
    • Push the clutch slave cylinder inward, then rotate counterclockwise 45 degrees to remove.

  33. Disconnect the transmission cooling tubes.

  35. Remove the 8 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  37. Remove the transmission.
    • Move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower from the vehicle.
