New generation function descriptions
Fundamentals
With the introduction of model series 177 (A-Class), the systematic documentation of function descriptions was fundamentally changed. The restructuring of the descriptions is used comprehensively for all subsequent new launches and facelifts throughout all specialist subjects. This includes all function descriptions for the vehicle model designations and the respective valid major assemblies. With model series 464 (G-Class), the Off-Road Vehicle Division now also uses the document. The new generation of function descriptions is based on the following measures:
- Definition of topic clusters
- Permanently defined cluster structures (reference structures)
- Standard record title for basic functions and detailed information
- Standardized document structure, uniform document classification
- Mainly model designation neutral description
- On demand model designation related information
- Breakup of redundant content in other document types
- Concentration on specific document-type content
- Brief, precise technical description
- Reference documents for function schematics (PE)
- Reference documents, component part description (GF) for electrical components (implementation as of model 223)

Cluster structure
The topic clusters are structurally arranged and defined at the first level by the above-mentioned. general documents. They describe each relevant technical subject in the record title. The hierarchically structured and permanently defined structural levels are subordinate to the umbrella document. These use specific record titles to describe the individual functions belonging to the specialist subject. The topic cluster structures are based on the GF basic function document type. The other documents types GF detailed information, PE function schematic and GF component part description only apply if required, and they are subject to the GF basic functions.
Document types/record titles
The new generation of function descriptions is made up from the GF function description, PE function schematics and GF component part descriptions document types (for all electrical components; implementation as of model 223).
The GF function description contains two classes of record titles: GF basic function and GF detailed information.
The GF basic functions are the standard documents that are always implemented. They include all the information that describes a defined function comprehensively and primarily on a model series neutral basis. The validity is set here primarily according to "All models". The resulting references to the GF detailed information, PE function schematics and GF component part descriptions are made on demand.
The GF detailed information refers to on-demand additional documents that are implemented when additional or deviating or model series specific information is required for the GF basic function. The validity is set here in a detailed, model series specific basis.
The PE function schematics refer to on-demand additional documents and they provide schematic representations for each function, the operating electrical component parts, their networking and the given signal paths. The validity is set here in a detailed, model series specific basis.
The GF component part descriptions are standard documents that are always implemented for all electrical component parts. This includes a graphic display of the component part, its electrical connector couplings with PIN numbering and the installation location in the vehicle or major assembly. The validity is set here in a detailed, model series specific basis.

Tables of contents are available for each vehicle, engine and transmission model series. Their validity is set here on a model series specific basis and they are structured on a model series specific basis. The tables of contents for the vehicle model designations include the references to the umbrella documents for the individual topic clusters. The tables of contents for the engine model designations only cover the topic cluster of the combustion engine, basic function (GF01.00-P-9901A ).

Document structure/document layout
The descriptions are always categorized according to the standardized record title for basic function and detailed information. The basic function here describes the common vehicle technologies. Detailed information describes special features specific to the vehicle or major assemblies in the context of a basic function.
The GF basic function document type always starts with the overview chapter and its table of contents for the chapters:
- General
- Function requirements
- Function
The General chapter (mandatory) uses text and pictures to describe the corresponding function in brief and general terms.
The Function Requirements chapter (optional) contains the technical requirements needed to fulfill the function listed in abbreviated form. This chapter is demand controlled.
The Function chapter (mandatory) contains a detailed description in text and image form. The reading direction always starts from a function and ends with each of the component parts involved. For the description of technical scopes, terms were chosen so that the integral text flows smoothly, thereby significantly enhancing legibility.
Depending on what is required, the above-mentioned chapters are assigned to corresponding subchapters. These include, for example, the subfunctions subordinate to the function that are not described in a separate document. Subchapters are always set directly below the chapter heading and in the corresponding format in the descriptive texts.
Description depth
The description depth is organized such that the complexity of the technical procedures defined in the record title, along with the operating principles of the systems, component part groups or component parts, are easy to understand and fully comprehensible for ALL the readers.
The descriptions must be created in such a way that they can be used primarily for all vehicles and major assemblies (document validity "All"; record titles, basic function).
The reader should be aware of the requirements that need to be met for the function to be described (input parameters and requirements necessary to run the system).
The descriptions include the overall and hierarchically arranged, actual procedure for a function as well as their subfunctions and, where necessary, the technical interaction with other systems.
The contents correspond to the interpretation of the respective technical status, using functionally distinctive formulations.
The abstraction of a function description is made up from the respective complementary interactions of representative pictures/graphics/Illustrations, along with the informative text chapters.
The critical triggers, acting component parts and components, the affected networks, the signal paths (basic PE function schematics) or the flows of substances, energies and information, along with the resulting consequences are to be provided here in greater detail.
Technical values are then specified when they assist or clarify a need for explanation or understanding about a function description.
The designation of component parts or assemblies is subject overall to the generally applicable nomenclature. As with the other document types, the electrical component parts are named based on their full wiring diagram component designations. By contrast, the basic function and detailed information for the record titles are no longer required, e.g. in the wiring diagram component abbreviated designations in the pictures or in the picture legends. - Test and set values, tightening torques, filling capacities, operating fluids, repair materials, special tools and similar.
- Instructions or instructions for operation, repair, diagnosis or similar.
- Fault scenarios, failure scenarios or descriptions of limp-home mode or temporary functions provided that they are not expressly required by the actual technical function sequence.
- Document references to document types of repair, maintenance, operation, diagnosis and wiring diagrams.
Pictures/graphics
All figures, illustrations and graphics used in the application are subject to the specifications in the Technical Illustrations Guideline. Depending on the application or purpose involved, various display variants are available:
- The view and overview images for component parts or installation spaces are designed to be model series neutral or model series specific, depending on the given use.
- System overviews or function sequences such as, e.g. cooling circuits use illustrations.
