360° Camera Picture Display, Basic Function - GF54.65-P-1004A

Model All (CAR)

Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The 360° camera system consists of four cameras that are integrated into the vehicle's front end (in the radiator grille) and rear end (in the release handle) as well as in the outside mirror housing.

The cameras record the immediate surroundings of the vehicle. The system provides assistance, e.g. when parking or in exits with poor visibility. The 360° camera system is operated using the multimedia system.

The driver can choose between various displays.

Function requirements

Function

The cameras record the required field of view. The driver is also shown dynamic and static guide lines. These form the vehicle dimensions and driving trajectories (driving paths) based on the steering angle. These displays help the driver, in particular, while maneuvering. Additional elements are displayed here that mark the area at risk at the vehicle corners.

The composite picture made up from the four individual camera pictures of the vehicle surroundings, is shown non the multimedia display while parking or maneuvering. Various angles of vision are shown (e.g. front/rear, trailer mode (vehicles with trailer hitch)).

The following camera views can be selected:

The "top view" also displays open doors or an open trunk lid or an open liftgate. The picture data from each affected each camera are hidden.

When the outside mirror housings are folded in (vehicles with electric folding outside mirror) the side areas of the vehicle can no longer be displayed. The corresponding areas are also hidden in this case.

A switch can be made between the views in the multimedia display automatically as well as manually. The view switches to the front and to the rear depending on the engaged gear (vehicles with manual transmission) or from the engaged drive range (vehicles with automatic transmission). Along with automatic selection, the driver can also switch manually between the various detailed views.

On vehicles with air suspension, the current vehicle level is used as the basis for equalization of the recorded pictures and the ideal display is then calculated.

Functional restrictions

The functions and displays on the 360 degree camera system are limited. Distortion and "blind spots" can occur.

In the "top view", objects outside road level (e.g. vehicles) are displayed with distortion.

Objects in the "Full screen forward/rearward field of view" (front camera and reversing camera) are also shown in distorted form. The assignment of objects in the picture when compared with how they appear in real-life is unusual.

There are different types of "blind spots" depending on the system and Model in question. One reason is the camera position over the respective bumper: Here, the camera loses the field of view immediately before and after the vehicle. They are system-related, particularly in the four overlapping areas of the fields of view of the cameras, when calculating a vehicle view as a "top view".

Furthermore, due to the low installation height of the cameras, there are areas where only objects close to the ground can be seen. This means, e.g., that people are not shown above approximately knee height in the "top view". In both cases, however, support is provided by the parking system.
