Disassemble/Assemble Suspension Strut - AR32.25-P-1018ME

Model 167 

Except Code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension) 

Except Code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove suspension strut concerned.   AR32.25-P-1017ME 
DISASSEMBLING Disassemble     
2 Clamp tensioning device (10) in vise and insert clamping plates (8, 9). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 3

3 Insert suspension strut into tensioning device (10). IMPORTANT When inserting suspension strut, attempt to get as many windings of spring (7) as possible in spring clamp.

4 Clamp spring (7) until upper spring retainer (3) is relieved. IMPORTANT The spring (7) must not be tensioned to a length less than 180 mm (measured from spring end to spring end).

5 Unscrew nut (2); when doing so, counterhold piston rod of shock absorber (11). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

6 Remove shock absorber (11). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

7 Remove dust boot (6) and stop buffer (5). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

8 Release tensioning device (10) and remove spring (7) with upper spring retainer (3) and spring seat (4). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 3

INSPECT Check     
9 Check shock absorber (11).   AR32.25-P-0121ME 
10 Check dust boot (6), stop damper (5) and spring seat (4) for wear and damage. If there is a problem,

replace corresponding component part.
 
ASSEMBLING Assemble     
11 Tension spring (7) using tensioning device (10). IMPORTANT The spring (7) must not be tensioned to a length less than 180 mm (measured from spring end to spring end).

12 Position spring (7) on shock absorber (11). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

13 Position dust boot (6), stop damper (5), spring seat (4) and upper spring retainer (3) on shock absorber (11) and spring (7). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

14 Adjust total thickness of shims. IMPORTANT The shims are located between the upper spring retainer (3) and the spring seat (4).
IMPORTANT The thickness as well as the number of shims depends on the load group of the spring (7), maximum stack height 20 mm.

16 Align upper spring retainer (3) before tightening nut (2). IMPORTANT Pay attention to installation position.

17 Tighten nut (2); when doing so, counterhold piston rod of shock absorber (11). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut to piston rod *BA32.25-P-1003-01O

18 Detension spring (7) until tensioning device (10) is relieved of load. SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 3

19 Remove suspension strut from tensioning device (10). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

20 Remove spring plates (8, 9) from tensioning device (10). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

21 Loosen vise and remove tensioning device (10). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plate Fig 2

INSTALLING Install     
22 Install suspension strut. Model 167
except code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension)
except code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)
AR32.25-P-1017ME 
23 Check headlamp adjustment and correct if necessary.
