Remove/Install Rear Axle Spring - AR32.20-P-0232ME

Model 167 

Except Code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension) 

Except Code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove right or left rear wheel and tire assembly.   AR40.10-P-1102ME
2 Using suitable means, mark installation position of all detachable parts on rear axle spring (1) relative to each other, relative to body and relative to lower control arm (2).    
3 Remove cover (11) from transverse control arm on left and right.    
4 Remove shock absorber from lower control arm (2).   AR32.25-P-0110ME 
5 Tension rear axle spring (1).   AR32.20-P-0202-06ME 
    NOTES
The tensioning device (3a) must not be tensioned or released using a pneumatically o electrically powered tool.
Otherwise damage will occur.

6 Disengage catch hooks (arrows), and remove rear axle spring (1) together with tensioning device (3a) and clamping plates (3b, 3c). SPECIAL TOOL Clamping plates Fig 2

7 Relieve rear axle spring (1).   AR32.20-P-0202-06ME 
    NOTES
The tensioning device (3a) must not be tensioned or released using a pneumatically o electrically powered tool. Otherwise damage will occur.

8 Replace retaining clip (6).    
INSPECT Check     
9 Remove lower spring retainer (5), upper spring retainer (4) and spring seat (10) and check for wear or damage. In the event of a problem,

Replace corresponding component.
 
  Adjust     
10 Adjust vehicle level by detaching spring seat (10) from upper spring retainer (4) and - depending on the change request - removing or adding shims (8).    
INSTALLING Install     
11 Tension rear axle spring (1) with tensioning device (3a) and clamping plates (3b, 3c) and position between lower control arm (2) and upper spring retainer (4). NOTES
The tensioning device (3a) must not be tensioned or released using a pneumatically or electrically powered tool.
Otherwise damage will occur.

12 Align installation position of all marked detachable parts on rear axle spring (1) relative to each other, relative to body and relative to lower control arm (2). IMPORTANT Check catch hooks (arrows) are correctly seated.

13 Relieve rear axle spring (1) and remove tensioning device (3a) and clamping plates (3b, 3c).   AR32.20-P-0202-06ME 
    NOTES
The tensioning device (3a) must not be tensioned or released using a pneumatically o electrically powered tool.
Otherwise damage will occur.

14 Install rear left or right wheel and tire assembly.   AR40.10-P-1102ME
  Concluding tasks     
15 Check vehicle level; correct if necessary.   AR40.20-P-0301ME
