Axles And Suspension - SN32.00-P-0001-01E
Model 167
Suspension and damping
The following springing and damping systems are available for the new GLE class model 167:
- Standard chassis with steel suspension
- AIRMATIC with front and rear air suspension with code 489 (AIRMATIC)
- Electrohydraulic suspension with code 490 (electrohydraulic suspension)
AIRMATIC
The AIRMATIC has the following new functions:
- Quicker lowering and lifting through the closed air supply and control of the new air suspension system in a controller unit.
- Automatic lowering at higher speeds; thus, reduction of consumption.
- More vehicle dynamics through automatic lowering function in the Sport and Sport+ drive programs.
- Automatic lowering of the rear end for better loading and unloading of the load compartment.
New functions
Rear-end lowering
The rear-end lowering is activated via a control element in the trunk.
To design loading and unloading of the trunk more comfortably, the vehicle is lowered to a defined level at the rear axle. The level at the front axle remains unchanged.
When rear-end lowering is activated, the rear axle is lowered by -40 mm from the currently set driving level, but no lower than level -70 mm.
If trailer operation is recognized, the "rear-end lowering" function is not activated
For more detailed descriptions, see function description GF32.22-P-1000A "air suspension basic function".
Electrohydraulic suspension
Even more ride comfort and agility as well as completely new functions, such as a recovery mode, offer optional electrohydraulic suspension. It is a fully active suspension, which is combined with AIRMATIC air suspension. It enables individual regulation of the spring and damper forces on each wheel. Thus, the electrohydraulic suspension works not just against rolling motions, but also pitch motions, and linear travels. In combination with the function of the road recording (ROAD SURFACE SCAN) and the curve inclination function (CURVE), the electrohydraulic suspension provides a high level of comfort.
Constituents
- 48 V based fully active electrohydraulic suspension
- Air suspension system
- Automatic level control system depending on speed and drive program
- Load detection
- "DYNAMIC SELECT" drive programs "Comfort", "Sport", "Curve" and "off-road". Depending on the vehicle equipment, intensifying Plus options are additionally available; "Sport plus" for certain engine variants and "off-road plus" for Code 430 (off-road package).
For more detailed descriptions, see function description GF32.50-P-1008A "electrohydraulic suspension basic function".

ON & OFF-ROAD package
The following functions/equipment are used in the ON & OFF-ROAD package special equipment:
- Permanent all-wheel drive with a lockable differential (transfer case) and two open differentials (front axle and rear axle)
- "Low range" cross-country reduction, which implements slow and better meterable off-road driving with high tractive force.
- DYNAMIC SELECT switch with the new "off-road Plus" drive program for difficult terrain
- Improved underbody protection with code 481
- Only in combination with 6-cylinder engines
- AIRMATIC with front and rear air suspension with code 489 (AIRMATIC)
- Adapted traction system (4ETS)
