Evasive steering support can help the driver if he wants to swerve around, e.g. a pedestrian in a hazardous situation.

If the driver initiates an evasive maneuver by means of a steering movement, the system supports this evasive steering request by specifying the electric power steering with additional, precisely calculated steering torque. This helps the driver avoid the pedestrian in a controlled manner, and afterward makes it easier to put the vehicle back onto a straight course, with additional support from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), if required.

Collisions with pedestrians can thus be avoided or the severity of injury can at least be reduced.

Support is always driver-initiated; the evasion direction is specified by the driver. The driver can therefore either go with the system activity or override the system.

Evasive steering support is operated together with the Active Brake Assist via the multimedia system.

Function requirements 

Function 

To assess the traffic situation ahead of the vehicle, evasive steering support evaluates the information from the front radar sensor and the information from the multifunction camera behind the windshield.

The evasive steering support function additionally evaluates the following function-relevant parameters:

If the system detects a pedestrian and the driver starts an evasive maneuver, the system supports this action.

Evasive steering support is active in a vehicle speed range from approx. 20 to approx. 70 km/h (approx. 20 to approx. 110 km/h from market launch of model 223).

If the road space monitoring function detects further obstacles in the danger zone, the system does not support the evasive steering request from the driver up to the market launch of model 223.

A warning tone sounds when support begins.

The system calculates the additional steering torque, which is implemented by the electric steering in the evasion direction. If physical driving limits are reached as a result of the evasive maneuver, the ESP® also intervenes.

Functional restrictions 

The evasive steering support function cannot always clearly recognize objects and complex traffic situations. Furthermore, the support function will in some cases not be sufficient to avoid a collision.
