Remove/Install Front Axle Shafts - AR33.30-P-0620MFA

Do not pour transmission oil into beverage bottles.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Move transmission to neutral position and release the parking brake.    
2 Remove left or right wheel and tire assembly.   AR40.10-P-1102MFA
3 Remove lower engine compartment lining. Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 260 with code M016 (Uprated engine)

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment lining after checking transmission oil level and after running an engine test.

4 Remove front part of left or right front fender liner.   AR88.10-P-1301MFA
5 Remove hub cap (1). IMPORTANT Do not damage the hub cap (1).
SPECIAL TOOL Removal and installation tool
If damage is present,

replace hub cap (1).

6 Remove bolt (2). INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not exceed bolt (2) torque.
Otherwise the angular contact ball bearing will be damaged.
IMPORTANT The aid of a helper is required when unscrewing and tightening the screw (2).
IMPORTANT Installation: Replace bolt (2).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle shaft to wheel bearing

7 Remove nut of lower control arm (5) from steering knuckle (9) and remove lower control arm (5). NOTES Counterhold the ball head and do not use an impact wrench/driver.
Otherwise, the ball head or steering knuckle (9) will be damaged.
IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools 
Combination wrench
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, supporting ball joint/transverse control arm to steering knuckle

8 Route front axle shaft (4) out of steering knuckle (9) and secure against falling down. IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.
IMPORTANT Installation: Spray Teflon coating onto gearing of front axle shaft (4) at left or right to wheel bearing.

    SPECIAL TOOL Extraction and insertion tool Fig 4
9 Unscrew screws (6) and remove front axle shaft intermediate bearing (7) from support (8). When removing right front axle shaft (4).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, intermediate shaft bearing cap to engine carrier

10.1 Pull left front axle shaft (4) out of transmission and remove. When removing left front axle shaft (4).
INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not damage radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) during installation.
Otherwise, the transmission will leak.
IMPORTANT Installation: Replace the retaining ring of the left front axle shaft (4).

10.2 Pull right front axle shaft (4) out of transmission and front axle shaft intermediate bearing (7) and remove. When removing right front axle shaft (4).
INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not damage radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) during installation.
Otherwise, the transmission will leak.
IMPORTANT Installation: Replace the retaining ring of the right front axle shaft (4).
Aid of helper required.

INSPECT Check     
11 Check boots of front axle shaft (4) for damage. When reusing front axle shaft (4).
If damage is present,

Replace boots of front axle shaft (4).

12 Check radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) for damage. If damage is present,

Replace radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4).

13 Install in the reverse order.    
INSPECT Check     
14 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary. Model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 AR27.00-P-0104MFA

    Model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 700.42
NOTES
Follow the prescribed work procedure exactly and observe the Specifications for Operating Fluids.
Otherwise the transmission may be damaged.

WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
15 Perform engine test run and check transmission for proper operation and leak tightness.    
16 Install lower engine compartment lining. Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 260 with code M016 (Uprated engine)
