Oil Consumption Test Drive

The exact oil consumption figures of an engine can only be determined by means of an oil consumption test drive. A determination by means of the dipstick does not give the required exact values.

Since the oil consumption depends largely on the driving method, i.e., on the load and speed of the engine, a circular test route of approx. 100 km length should be selected in order to conform as far as possible to normal operating conditions. The test route should include approx. 30 to 40 km Autobahn or the like so that this section may be covered almost with the maximum speed of the respective vehicle.

Over the whole test route the vehicle should be driven with a specific average speed and the speeds determined for the individual sections of the test route should be adhered to as far as possible during other test drives.

It is advisable to have the various oil consumption test drives carried out by the same driver. The vehicle should be loaded with 2 persons or with driver + 75 kg weight (trucks and buses with 2 tons weight). By observing these conditions it is possible to determine the oil consumption of various engines and to compare them.

Prior to the oil consumption test drive, the engine should be thoroughly checked for possible leaks, which may cause oil losses (for instance, at the oil filter, at the cylinder head cover, etc.).

The oil consumption should be determined in accordance with the following instructions:

  1. Keep a clean receptacle in readiness and weigh the empty receptacle.
  2. Heat up engine; the oil temperature should amount to 75 to 80°C. It should be measured by means of an electric telethermometer, 000 589 2127, the temperature feelers of which are dipped into the oil pan instead of the oil dipstick.
  3. Park the car on a level spot and mark its position so that the vehicle may be parked in the same spot after the drive.
  4. With trucks and buses move the choke knob to stop position. Then check whether control lever at the injection pump is really in stop position.
  5. Unscrew locking screw of the oil pan and drain the oil heated up to operating temperature into the clean receptacle. Drainage time 30 minutes. After 15 to 20 and 25 minutes of the drainage time start the engine for 10 seconds each time. With passenger cars equipped with gasoline engines remove the distributor cap and with cars equipped with Diesel engines either cover the intake nipple or remove the glow plugs.
  6. Refit the locking screw of the oil pan and tighten same.
  7. Weigh receptacle with drained oil on a balance with gram graduation, adjusting the oil quantity according to the prescribed weight of the respective oil filling.
  8. Fill the weighed oil quantity carefully into the engine. Take care that nothing is spilled. The receptacle which will be used again after the test drive must neither be used during the time the test drive is carried out, nor cleaned, since otherwise errors might be caused as to the weight.
  9. Drive the vehicle under the above conditions for approx. 100 km.
  10. Park the vehicle on the marked spot immediately after the test drive.
  11. Put the receptacle used before aside and drain the oil. The drainage time is again 30 minutes. After 15 to 20 and 25 minutes of the drainage time start the engine for 10 seconds each time. (With trucks and buses please observe item 4.) Refit the locking screw of the oil pan and tighten same.
  12. Weigh again the receptacle filled with oil and determine the oil consumption. It is derived from the weight difference between the 2 measuring prior to and after the test drive.

The oil consumption (boil) is mostly indicated in liters and is calculated form the ascertained difference in weight, the specific gravity (Wichte), of the oil used, and the distance covered according to the formula given on the front page of this test sheet.
