Replacement of a component part in the coolant circuit Installation of a new component part
When installing a new metallic component part in the coolant circuit that comes into contact with the coolant (e.g. cooler, heater core, charge air cooler), the drained quantity of coolant must be disposed of and replaced with fresh coolant. Otherwise, vehicles may be damaged due to faulty anti-corrosion protection, which may result in a total loss in economic terms. Coolant that has not been drained off may remain in the cooling circuit.
For other components (hoses, etc.) and components with small metallic surfaces (temperature sensor, thermostat, fitting, etc.), the coolant may be collected in a new can and added again.
Storage of a removed component part
If a metallic component part of the coolant circuit is removed and reinstalled during replacement, it is recommended that this component part be stored unfilled for no longer than 3 days because otherwise severe corrosion will occur. This can lead to corrosion inhibitors no longer being able to protect these metallic surfaces even once they are filled with fresh coolant.
Along with the removed parts, the cooling circuit on the vehicle that is still open must also be sealed off or, where possible, filled with coolant. If such removed or retained metallic component parts remain wet and drained for longer than 3 days, they must then be either fully drained or, where possible, completely filled with fresh coolant. The connections of these components must be air-sealed shut during replacement. This reduces the speed of the corrosion.
