General
Exhaust turbocharging compacts the suctioned fresh air and increases the fill level of the cylinder. The engine output increases.
There are different charging procedures for exhaust-gas turbocharging.
Single-speed exhaust-gas turbocharging
The single-speed exhaust turbocharging is realized with an exhaust gas turbocharger.
Multistage exhaust-gas turbocharging
The multistage exhaust gas turbocharging usually takes place with two exhaust gas turbochargers of differing sizes, arranged in succession. Alternatively, exhaust turbocharging can take place with two exhaust gas turbochargers arranged in parallel, e.g. with the Biturbo.
Function requirements
- Combustion engine in operation.
Function
The exhaust gases reach the turbine wheel via the intake on the exhaust gas turbocharger's turbine wheel housing.
Via a constriction, thermal energy is converted into kinetic energy and the turbine wheel starts to rotate.
The turbine wheel is on the same shaft as the compressor wheel. The compressor wheel is set in motion by the rotation of the turbine wheel and intakes fresh air.
The fresh air sucked in is compressed in the compressor wheel housing and reaches the engine through an outlet via the charge air cooler.
