Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The environment monitoring system scans the area around the vehicle with the aid of distance sensors in the front and rear bumpers.

Function requirements

Function

Environment monitoring is based on the ultrasound measurement method. The distance sensors transmit ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic waves reflected by an obstacle are received again by the distance sensors.

During reverse travel the areas in front of and behind the vehicle are monitored. When driving forwards the area in front of the vehicle is monitored. Side obstacles are detected when the vehicle is driving past if they were detected first by the side sensors in the front and rear bumpers. Ambient monitoring is in measuring mode at speeds below 10 km/h. When objects are detected, the driver is warned by the respective warning segments in the multimedia display illuminating and, at close range, a warning tone. The vehicle must cover at least the distance of half of the vehicle length for side display. The side warning is only issued if the steering movement is toward the obstacle.

When the speed exceeds the limit speed of 12 km/h, the environment monitoring system switches back to standby mode.

If a trailer is detected (vehicles with trailer hitch) (electrical connection established between the vehicle and a trailer), the environment monitoring system is deactivated at the rear.

Display with detected obstacle

If Active Parking Assist is not switched on and an obstacle is detected in the vehicle's path, a pop-up window (14) appears in the multimedia display at speeds up to 10 km/h. The system can display an obstacle at the sides on the multimedia display (passive sideguard). The area at the side of the vehicle between the effective areas of the sensors is determined using a computer model. The system must have fully detected the obstacle at selector lever position D, R or N.
