General
Active Parking Guidance makes it easier to enter and exit a parking space.
On vehicles with manual transmission, emergency braking is applied while being assisted in and out of a parking space, if an imminent collision is detected.
On vehicles with automatic transmission, the system takes over driving into and out of the space as well as signaling, steering, starting up, braking, and changing gears.
On vehicles with the "Remote-controlled parking" special equipment, the vehicle automatically maneuvers into the selected parking space and out again. The user is in the immediate vicinity. They start, monitor, and end the procedure from the outside using their smartphone.
Active Parking Guidance (automatic parking space entry/exit) is available in different ways depending on the model series and model year:
As of YoMJ20/1 (code 801), on model 293 the functional scope of code 235 (Active Parking Assist) in combination with code 8B8 (Active Parking Assist reduction (UN R79)) is restricted only to the "PARKTRONIC" Parking Assist function. Automated parking space entry/exit is not available here.
As of YoMJ20/2 (code 801 + 051), on models 118/167/177/243/247/257/293 in combination with code 8B6 (Parking Assist with transverse function (UN R79)), only the functional scope 'entry/exit in parking spaces perpendicular to roadway' is available. Models 213/238/223 are not affected by the modifications or restrictions.
Function requirements
- Engine in operation or drivetrain operational
- Parking space detected and selected
- Vehicle speed below 10 km/h (vehicles with automatic transmission)
- No trailer detected (vehicles with trailer hitch) (environment monitoring while reversing)
- Vehicle was previously parked automatically (only for exiting parking space)
Function
Active Parking Guidance is started by selecting a parking space previously detected by the system.
The system evaluates the following function-relevant parameters for this:
- Drive range (vehicles with automatic transmission)
- Electric power steering, status
- Wheel speeds and wheel rotation direction
- Steering wheel angle
- Status of anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
- Trailer recognition (vehicles with trailer hitch)
Parking
If Active Parking Guidance is started, various driving instructions and messages are displayed to the driver. The turn signal indicator is activated (only during the first maneuver). The driver can now take the hands off the steering wheel.
If the driver does not take his/her hands off the steering wheel (hands-on detection), the procedure is aborted.
Active Parking Guidance steers the vehicle into the parking space with targeted steering movements. The driver must drive and brake themselves in vehicles with manual transmission.
The vehicle can be braked and the direction of travel changed by the driver during the procedure. Active Parking Guidance then calculates a new route. The procedure can be continued after this. The engine torque is influenced such that the vehicle does not drive faster than 10 km/h (vehicles with manual transmission) or 4 km/h (vehicles with automatic transmission). The driver can reduce speed using the brake pedal. After a maximum of 12 moves, the parking procedure is ended, but the driver can take over at any time.
Exiting a parking space
Assisted exiting of a parking space can only be started if the parking space was entered beforehand with the assistance function.
After the driver has started the engine and activated the parking system, the system then asks if an assisted unparking procedure is to be started. When exiting a parking space that is aligned at an incline or a right-angle to the direction of travel, the driver can select the direction of travel or start the procedure. The turn signal indicator is activated throughout the entirety of the parking space exit maneuver. The driver can now take the hands off the steering wheel.
Exiting parking spaces that are aligned parallel to the direction of travel:
As soon as the vehicle is at a sufficient incline to enable it to be driven in one straight move out of the parking space, the wheels are straightened up. The process has been completed. The unparking procedure is completed at the latest once the vehicle is at an angle of approx. 45° relative to the start position.
Driving forwards out of parking spaces that are aligned at an incline or at right angle to direction of travel:
When parking, the system stores the angle between the drive-by position past and the target position. When exiting a parking space the handover takes place at about 10° before reaching the drive-by direction.
Reversing out of parking spaces that are aligned at an incline or right angle to direction of travel:
When parking, the system stores the angle between the drive-by position past and the target position. When exiting a parking space the handover takes place roughly parallel to the drive-by direction.
After completing the unparking procedure, the driving path shown on the multimedia display changes from green to yellow. The hands-off icon flashes and a warning tone prompts the driver to take over. The driver is then actively in charge of driving the vehicle again.
