Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster informs the driver about all dynamic and static vehicle conditions as well as about the condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.
If faults occur at individual systems or in critical safety-relevant driving situations, corresponding warnings are displayed in the instrument cluster.
To make this information visible to the driver, the instrument cluster can actuate the following displays:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, engine speed, tank content)
- Symbols for control messages (green, yellow, red or blue) (e.g. turn signal light, high beam)
- Symbols for warning messages (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Displays in menu (e.g. Driver assistance system, menu sequence)

Operation of instrument cluster:
The instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to display various menu levels in the instrument cluster:
- The Home and Back button can be used to jump back from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level. Via a long press of the "Home" and "Back" button it is possible to jump to the main menu.
- The finger navigation pad on the instrument cluster can be used to navigate in menus (right/left) or lists (up/down). By pressing the instrument cluster finger navigation pad, the respective selection or pending messages can be confirmed. Acoustic feedback is issued when operating the instrument cluster finger navigation pad.
Pressing the "Back" button for a prolonged period causes the display to return to the "Trip" menu.
The available main menus and submenus depend on the vehicle equipment.
Model 257, 290 up to model year 2021 with code 464 (Instrument cluster 12.3" diagonal)
If cooling is required, the instrument cluster reports this fact via the user interface CAN to the head unit, which actuates the digital instrument cluster full display fan motor (M4/12).
The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The multifunction display of the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the user interface CAN, e.g. by:
- Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
- Driver door opened
- Activation of circuit 15R (radio position)
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If there is a fault, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for information indicator test (except code 464 (Digital instrument cluster full display))
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the instrument cluster via user interface CAN.
Function sequence for information indicator test (except code 464 (Digital instrument cluster full display))
The monitor lamp test is used to perform a function test on certain warning and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster performs this test automatically each time circuit 15 (ignition) is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the monitor lamp test:
- Trailer indicator (with code 550 (Trailer hitch))
- Anti-lock braking system warning lamp (yellow)
- Battery indicator lamp
- Brake fluid and parking brake indicator lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Engine diagnosis warning lamp (yellow)
- Supplemental Restraint System indicator lamp (red)
- Suspension malfunction indicator lamp (yellow) (with code 459 (Steel suspension with adjustable damping) or code 489 (AIR BODY CONTROL))
- Brake system warning lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC) or code 258 (Active Brake Assist) or code 23P (Driving Assistance Package))
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) warning lamp
- ESP®/ASR warning lamp OFF (yellow)
- Parking brake warning lamp (yellow)
- Fuel reserve warning lamp (yellow)
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Power steering warning lamp
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
- Seat belt warning lamp (red)
The indicator test ends when the engine is started.
Operation of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Low beam indicator lamp
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Standing lamps indicator lamp
- Preglow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
