Driver assistance systems, general 

The driver assistance systems support the driver in various situations either actively or passively depending on the configuration of the systems. In both cases, the driver assistance systems contribute to driving safety. This helps to reduce the frequency of accidents and their consequences. Ride comfort is also enhanced.

The following driver assistance systems are available:

Active Brake Assist 

Active Brake Assist can assist the driver while braking. In order to assess the traffic situation and detect potential collisions, Active Brake Assist evaluates information from the radar sensors. Active Brake Assist can react to stationary or moving vehicles, as well as to crossing pedestrians and bike riders.

The assistance system is active from 7 km/h upwards, provides warnings about potential collisions visually and acoustically, and can brake the vehicle autonomously. The system warns the driver visually at speeds above 30 km/h if the distance to the preceding vehicle is too short. If the distance decreases quickly at speeds above 7 km/h so that there is a danger of a collision, it warns by means of an additional acoustic signal. If the driver brakes, the Active Brake Assist may also provide assistance depending on the given situation. It builds up additional brake pressure, if required, in order to avoid a collision as far as possible. In addition, Active Brake Assist can perform automatic braking up to maximum full-stop braking if the driver does not react sufficiently by himself. If the pressure on the brake pedal is released or the hazardous situation passes, the additional brake force is canceled.

The multifunction steering wheel or the multimedia system, if installed, can be used to select three sensitivity levels (early, medium, late) or the system can be switched off completely. If Active Brake Assist has been deactivated, an appropriate symbol appears in the status line of the multifunction display in the instrument cluster.

Attention assistance system 

ATTENTION ASSIST is integrated into the ESP® control unit. It can assist the driver on long, monotonous journeys by monitoring the driver's level of attentiveness. If signs of fatigue or increasing inattentiveness are detected, it suggests a break.

In the first 15 to 30 minutes, the assistance system generates an individual driver profile, which is then permanently compared with the driving style. Up to 70 parameters such as, e.g. time of day, driving time and speed, steering movements etc., can be taken into account here. ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the vehicle speed range between 60 km/h and the possible maximum design speed. It is possible to select between the settings "Standard", "Sensitive" and "OFF". If ATTENTION ASSIST detects fatigue or increasing inattentiveness, it warns by showing the display message "Break!" and a coffee cup symbol. An acoustic warning also sounds. If the driver fails to take a break and Attention Assist continues to detect increasing inattentiveness, another warning is issued after 15 minutes at the earliest.

In the standard instrument cluster, the attention assistance system displays the measured attention level with a 5-stage bar. The bar empties as attentiveness decreases. In addition, the driving time since the last break is displayed.

In instrument clusters with higher-level equipment, the display of the assistance system appears as a circular symbol with a coffee cup in the center. As attentiveness decreases, the circle in the middle of the display empties from the outside inwards. In addition, the driving time since the last break is displayed.

ATTENTION ASSIST functionality may also be impaired in the following situations:

In such instances, a warning occurs with a delay or not at all.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC 

The radar-assisted system monitors the traffic area in front of the vehicle through the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC electric controller unit. The system assists the driver here by automatically maintaining the set distance to the preceding vehicle by braking (if necessary to a standstill) or accelerating. DISTRONIC operates in a vehicle speed range of 20 km/h to 160 km/h and up to a distance of 200 m. It can therefore help not only on freeways, but also when in urban or stop-and-go traffic.

If the vehicle has been stationary for more than 3 seconds, the accelerator pedal must be depressed briefly in order to start off automatically. If the vehicle is idle for less than 3 seconds, the vehicle automatically starts off again.

The difference between the speed of a detected preceding vehicle and the driver's stored speed is displayed visually by means of red segments in the speedometer. If the distance to a vehicle driving immediately ahead is reduced, the vehicle brakes at a braking power of up to 50 % of the maximum braking power. If the system detects that this deceleration is not sufficient, the driver is visually and acoustically warned. If the vehicle has been braked to a standstill, the system must be reactivated.

DISTRONIC is activated by pressing the variable speed limiter/DISTRONIC button on the multifunction steering wheel and deactivated by operating the brake pedal or also using the variable speed limiter/DISTRONIC button.

IMPORTANT If the vehicle is equipped with code JA9 (Traffic Sign Assist) and this is activated, the speed detected by Traffic Sign Assist is not adopted automatically. It must be actively confirmed by the driver. If DISTRONIC is off and Active Brake Assist is not deactivated, the situation in front of the vehicle continues to be captured and evaluated. In dangerous situations warnings are given, as described above, or autonomous braking takes place.

Blind spot assist 

Blind Spot Assist can detect vehicles in the blind spot through the two rear bumper radar sensors. The detection range extends from the B-pillar across approx. 3.5 m in width to both sides of the vehicle and extends up to approx. 3 m beyond the rear area.

If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red hazard warning triangle appears in the respective outside mirror. If, despite this visual warning, the driver activates the turn signal for a lane change, the hazard warning triangle begins to flash and a warning tone sounds.

The system is active in a vehicle speed range of 30 km/h until the maximum design speed of the vehicle is reached. Blind Spot Assist is deactivated at speeds below 30 km/h, in reverse gear and in trailer operation when connected to the vehicle through the trailer socket.

Blind Spot Assist can be switched on or off using the menu in the onboard computer or the multimedia system.

Additional functions 

"Rear Cross Traffic Alert" 

Activated when reverse gear is engaged, "Rear Cross Traffic Alert" can warn the driver about traffic crossing the vehicle's path. When an object is detected, the warning lamp lights up red in the outside mirror on the respective side. If a critical situation is detected, a warning tone also sounds. In combination with code JB6 (Parking Package with 360° camera) or code JB7 (Parking Package with reversing camera), a symbol appears in the multimedia system in critical situations. If there is no reaction by the driver, the vehicle can be braked automatically.

"Exit warning" 

If an approaching vehicle is detected, the exit warning system can warn the vehicle occupants about it when they leave the vehicle. The system is available up to a maximum of 3 minutes after the ignition is switched off. If an object is detected at a short distance and the driver's or front passenger's door is opened, a visual warning and a warning tone are issued. The end of the availability of the exit warning is indicated by a flashing sequence in the outside mirror.

IMPORTANT Blind Spot Assist, including all its additional functions, is not available when driving with a trailer or similar.

Crosswind Assist 

The Crosswind Assist detects wind influences that act on the vehicle, and issues visual signals to warn the driver.

The ESP® control unit regulates a one-sided brake application at the front and rear axles which counteracts the crosswind and the yaw motion of the vehicle.

Traffic Sign Assist 

Traffic Sign Assist uses a multifunction camera on the inside of windshield to recognize traffic signs such, e.g. speed limits, no-entry and no-passing signs etc. Signs at the roadside, on sign gantries and in construction sites can be detected.

The received data are compared with the information of the navigation system and displayed both in the instrument cluster and in the map view. Because Traffic Sign Assist uses the data stored in the navigation system, the display can be updated even when no traffic signs are detected. If the vehicle enters a section of road going in the wrong direction, the driver is warned visually and acoustically.

In addition, a warning can be set in the multimedia system for when the maximum permissible speed is exceeded. The warning can be output either visually or acoustically.

Traffic Sign Assist can be switched on or off using the menu of the on-board computer or the multimedia system. On vehicles with a permissible gross mass greater than 3.5 t, the traffic signs valid for trucks are also shown.

Lane Keeping Assist 

Lane Keeping Assist is added as standard equipment for all vehicles with a permissible gross mass of over 3.5 t and features a multifunction camera positioned on the inside of the windshield. Lane Keeping Assist is active as from a speed of 60 km/h up to the maximum design speed. The camera can register clear lane markings by evaluating the differences in contrast between the road surface and boundary lines. An electronic control unit processes the camera data and the activities of the driver, and determines whether the vehicle is leaving the lane intentionally or unintentionally. If an unintentional lane departure is detected, the system issues warnings acoustically, visually and haptically by means of vibrations in the steering wheel.

The risk of accidents due to microsleeps or waning concentration can therefore be reduced. Lane Keeping Assist is operated via the instrument cluster and, if installed, via the multimedia system. The assist function is displayed in the instrument cluster via a status symbol.

The code JY9 (Omission of Lane Keeping Assist) can be used to omit the Lane Keeping Assist system. In this case, the registration requirements must be assured in advance.

Active Lane Keeping Assist 

Active Lane Keeping Assist can prevent unintended lane departures.

Compared to Lane Keeping Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist can initiate targeted, course-correcting interventions via the ESP®. When a course-correcting brake application is performed by Active Lane Keeping Assist, a corresponding display appears in the multifunction display. If the lane markings are not recognizable, e.g. due to poor visibility, the function of system can be impaired or Active Lane Keeping Assist may be inoperative.

CRUISE CONTROL 

The cruise control constantly adjusts the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver. The vehicle is also automatically braked through active intervention by the brake system when driving down a hill to maintain the target speed.
