Instrument cluster standard 

The standard instrument cluster has two large analog displays for vehicle speed and engine speed. The 3.5 "great black and white pixel matrix display shows:

A display field arranged above the pixel matrix display contains warning and control lights. The multifunction display is operated using buttons on the instrument cluster or, optionally, using the steering wheel buttons.

The instrument cluster with color display (with code JK5 (instrument cluster with color display)) has two great analog displays with chrome rings for:

A centrally located high-resolution 5.5; color display & rdquo; enables clear menu navigation in the driver's field of vision. All information can be selected and displayed in the menu, depending on the selected vehicle equipment:

The menu is selected on the multifunction steering wheel using the top left touch control field.

Task 

The instrument cluster provides information on dynamic and static vehicle conditions. Corresponding warnings are issued if errors occur.

The following displays are possible:

The instrument cluster activates the warning buzzer to output warning and control tones.

Function in general 

The following partial functions can be carried out on the instrument cluster:

Activate the instrument cluster 

The instrument cluster is activated by unlocking the vehicle.

Control and warning light test 

The control and warning light test is carried out automatically each time terminal 15 is switched on.

For this purpose, all control and warning lights, except the control lights for outside lighting, flashing light and pre-glow, are activated until the engine starts.

Show operating status 

The following operating states are displayed on the instrument cluster:

Display of the speed 

The control unit ESP sends the wheel speed signals to the instrument cluster. This calculates the vehicle speed from this, compares it with the internally stored speedometer characteristic and controls the speedometer accordingly via a stepper motor.

Display of the engine speed 

The CDI or ME control unit sends the engine speed signal to the instrument cluster. This controls the tachometer accordingly via a stepper motor.

Display of the coolant temperature 

The CDI or ME control unit sends the coolant temperature signal to the instrument cluster. This controls the coolant temperature display accordingly.

The coolant temperature display is controlled via a correction characteristic. This correction characteristic defines the following temperature ranges in which the coolant temperature display is controlled differently:

At coolant temperatures> 130 ° C, the instrument cluster also activates the coolant temperature warning light. A corresponding warning appears on the multifunction display. If the instrument cluster does not receive a value for the coolant temperature, it activates the coolant temperature warning light. The coolant temperature display is then not activated.

Distance displayed 

The instrument cluster calculates the distance covered from the wheel speeds, taking the tire circumference into account.

Display of the amount of fuel 

The level of the fuel tank is recorded by the level sensor integrated in the fuel pump with level sensor. The fuel pump control unit sends the corresponding signal via the drive CAN, drive train control unit, chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the CAN user interface to the instrument cluster. This controls the fuel gauge accordingly.

When the reserve area is reached, the instrument cluster activates the fuel reserve warning light. A corresponding message also appears on the multifunction display.

The reserve area is defined by comparing the measured level with the tank curve stored in the instrument cluster. When the reserve area has dropped to approx. 50%, the menu Range instead of the distance, a pump symbol is shown.

Display behavior of the fuel gauge:

IMPORTANT By comparing the change in the level of the fuel tank with the calculated average consumption, a defective level sensor is detected. A corresponding message appears in the multifunction display.

Gear display and drive program display (with automatic transmission) 

The fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) (N15 / 11) sends the gear and drive program information to the instrument cluster. This shows the gear display and the driving program display in the multifunction display.

Display ECO (with code MJ8 (ECO start / stop function)) The CDI or ME control unit sends the status of the ECO start / stop function to the instrument cluster. The operational readiness of the ECO start / stop function is indicated to the driver in the multifunction display by the "ECO" symbol. displayed.

Transport mode display 

When the transport mode is activated, the message Transport mode and the state of charge of the on-board power supply battery is displayed in 40 levels in the form of a bar chart.

Comfort displays 

The comfort displays provide a quick overview of the following information:

Display of the outside temperature 

The SAM control unit sends the outside temperature to the instrument cluster.

In order to be able to display the actual outside temperature, the following parameters must also be taken into account:

The CDI or ME control unit sends information on the coolant temperature to the instrument cluster.

The values of the coolant temperature influence the display of the outside temperature as follows:

The control unit ESP calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speeds and sends the calculated vehicle speed to the instrument cluster.

Time display 

The radio (Audio / COMAND) sends information about the time to the instrument cluster.

Dial illumination of the instrument cluster 

When the instrument cluster is activated, the dial lighting is switched on. The instrument cluster automatically adjusts the brightness to the ambient brightness.

The trip computer (RRE) 

The RRE provides data and information on average fuel consumption, travel time, average speed, distance traveled and range, which it displays as follows:

The information displayed relates to the time of the last reset of the short-range memory ("from start") or of the long-range memory ("from reset").

The information is shown in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster as follows:

The RRE comprises the following sub-functions:

Display of the distance from start / reset 

The display of the distance From the start occurs in a range from 0 to 9999 km.

The distance From Reset is analogous to the route From the start calculated, but a range from 0 to 99,999 km is displayed here.

Display of the time from start / reset 

With Terminal 15 ON the time from the start is added up by means of a timer. The display takes place over a range from 0 to 999 hours and 59 minutes.

The time from the reset is determined in the same way as the time from the start, but here the display is in a range from 0 to 9999 h and 59 min.

Average speed display 

The RRE calculates the average speed from the relationship between the distance traveled and the time (travel time) since the short- or long-distance memory was last reset.

Display of current consumption and average consumption 

The CDI or ME control unit sends information on fuel consumption to the instrument cluster. This calculates the current and average consumption.

Display of the range 

The expected range is calculated from the relationship between the current tank content and the average fuel consumption.

Keys for operating the instrument cluster 

Depending on the equipment of the vehicle, the buttons for operating the instrument cluster are installed on the instrument cluster or on the steering wheel. Function and operation are described in the individual systems and the operating instructions.

Control and warning messages 

The messages shown in the multifunction display are divided into 4 categories according to their urgency:

These messages are displayed within a maximum of 2 seconds after their occurrence, automatically stored in the message memory and cannot be acknowledged. When it occurs, a short warning tone is output via the instrument cluster loudspeaker.
