Working speed control

Engine functions

Engine speed control function

The parameterizable special module (PSM) control unit (N26/15) enables functions in the Common Rail Direct Injection (CDI) control unit or the ME gasoline injection and ignition system (ME) control unit to be influenced.

To do so, the parameterizable function module "Engine speed control" has been implemented which ensures that the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is operated correctly.

It is possible to set a specified value for engine speed, maximum engine speed, maximum engine torque and maximum vehicle speed via the engine speed control module. These functions are distributed across various sub-modules (see picture below). If a function is not required, it can be deactivated via the associated sub-module.

However, it is generally necessary to parameterize several sub-modules in order to map a function such as working speed control, for example. The individual modules for engine speed control are shown in the picture below.

Function "Working speed control"

The actual speed of the engine can be regulated via the working speed control function.

On the one hand, several fixed RPM values can be specified and, on the other hand, the RPM can also be freely adjusted via push button.

For safety reasons, the working speed control function can only be used on a stationary vehicle with the parking brake applied.

Engine speed regulation

IMPORTANT The input and output parameters are described in general in the overview picture. A detailed description of the inputs and outputs of the module including possible settings is available in the respective sub-module.

The PSM control unit can activate output of engine speed limits, torque limits and vehicle speed limits (GB) through inputs or body manufacturer CAN signals.

The following conditions must be fulfilled for this function:

If these conditions are fulfilled, it is possible to activate the output of limit values via the inputs of the respective module.

Working speed control enables the body manufacturer (ABH) to adjust the engine speed.

The working speed controls ensure that sudden changes in RPM or exceeding the parameterized minimum and maximum RPM are not possible. In the event of a fault, the system attempts to set the lowest possible engine speed (idle speed) or to completely deactivate working speed control.

With working speed control, the following input conditions can be parameterized for internal function enable:

The following conditions are always checked to enable the function "Working speed control" i.e. these conditions are fixed:

If these conditions are fulfilled, an input or the body manufacturer CAN can be used to activate the internal function enable.

If the internal function enable has been activated, the engine speed specification in the PSM control unit can be output and changed. The possibilities for changing the engine speed are listed below in the order corresponding to their priority (fixed speed, hand throttle actuator, increase, reduction or resumption).

"RPM limitation" function

The PSM control unit can activate output of engine speed limits, torque limits and vehicle speed limits (GB) through inputs or body manufacturer CAN signals.

The following conditions must be fulfilled for this function:

If these conditions are fulfilled, it is possible to activate the output of limit values via the inputs of the respective module.

"Fixed speed" function

Inputs or the body manufacturer CAN can be used to issue 3 different fixed speeds. Each fixed speed can be assigned a run-on time of up to 25.5 s. If a fixed speed is selected, it is approached using a ramp. If no fixed speed is selected then the lower RPM limit of the working speed control is approached with a ramp when none of the other RPM changes is active.

Hand throttle actuator

The hand-throttle actuator can be operated either via an analog input (input 07 or 08) of the PSM control unit or via the body manufacturer CAN (signal 0x3023 (requested engine speed for working speed control)). In both cases, the engine speed is bounded by the parameterized limits (minimum and maximum) of the hand throttle actuator.

To activate the hand throttle actuator, the accelerator pedal module must be in a rest position and the engine speed must be in a stable condition.

When using an analog input, it is possible to switch the hand throttle actuator on and off via input "Value for hand throttle actuator via analog/digital converter".

When the hand throttle actuator is activated, a ramp is initially used to approach the set engine speed. When this engine speed has been reached, the changes made at the hand throttle actuator are forwarded directly.

IMPORTANT Use commercially available hand throttle actuators, like those used for Mercedes-Benz trucks. Use a high-side output of the PSM control unit as a power supply for this hand throttle actuator. Failure to do so may result in severe fluctuations in engine speed.

"RPM change" function

This operating mode has the lowest priority and can therefore only be used when neither the fixed speed nor the hand throttle actuator are active.

The input sources are either the Cruise control switch, inputs on the PSM control unit or signals from the body manufacturer CAN. The functions are "Increase RPM", "Reduce RPM" and "Resume RPM".

The RPM changes know 2 operating modes, the step mode and the ramp mode.

In the stage mode, the engine speed is reduced or increased by the parameterized stage height each time an input is actuated. If the input remains actuated, the system changes to ramp mode. A ramp with the parameterized ramp slope is then output. This ramp stops either when an engine speed limit is reached or when actuation of the input is canceled.

IMPORTANT If the "Hand throttle actuator" or "Fixed speed" function is activated, then it is not possible to switch between stepped and ramp speed.

The RPM resume functions similar to a cruise control. If this input is actuated, a previously stored engine speed is approached again. This is done using a ramp.

The engine speed is stored each time an input used for increasing or reducing the engine speed (in stage or ramp mode) is actuated. If working speed control is deactivated and reactivated, the current engine speed is adopted as the new start value. Actuating the resumption function sets the original engine speed again.

The value for resume is only stored until the PSM control unit changes to rest mode (e.g. if the vehicle is parked for a longer period).

As long as it is "circuit 15 ON" the value is stored.

Waiting time after operation of clutch pedal

Depending on the parameterization, the clutch status must be "clutch depressed" or "clutch fully depressed" and this must be the case for the period of time which is stored in the parameter "waiting time after operation of clutch pedal". This condition is thus fulfilled in the function module "Fixed speed" and "RPM limitation".

Signals of function working speed control which are stored in the signal pool

Enabling of working speed control

This bit signal is used as an enable signal for further "working speed control" function modules. It is set by the function module "Working speed control".

This signal is set when the inputs of the function module "Working speed control" are valid, the times for the function enable and the clutch waiting time have elapsed and one of the working speed control requests (input, body manufacturer CAN, power take-off) is active. The request to activate the working speed control is forwarded over the interior CAN (CAN B).

Specified value of RPM (module "RPM change")

This 16-bit value is calculated by the RPM change function module and it is the specification for the speed forwarded over the interior CAN (CAN B). This engine speed is bounded by the current RPM limits and is calculated using the inputs at the function module "Change of engine speed".

IMPORTANT This value is valid, when the inputs of the function module RPM change and the signal "Enabling of working speed control" is active.

Current maximum RPM limit (module "RPM limitation")

This 16-bit value is selected by the function module RPM limitation based on the parameterization for the maximum RPM from the inputs. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest maximum engine speed is selected in each case.

This value is determined depending on the status of the bit signals "Enabling of working speed control" and "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off" module)" based on the following parameters:

IMPORTANT This value is valid if the inputs of the function module "RPM limitation" are valid and the signal "Enabling of fixed speed" is active.

Current minimum RPM limit (module "RPM limitation")

This 16-bit value is selected by the function module RPM limitation based on the parameterization for the minimum RPM. If more than one input is active at the same time, the highest minimum engine speed is selected in each case.

Current maximum torque (module "RPM limitation")

This 16-bit value is selected by the function module RPM limitation based on the parameterization for the maximum torques. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest torque is selected in each case.

Current maximum speed (module "RPM limitation")

This 8-bit value is selected from the function module "RPM limitation" based on the parameterization for the maximum vehicle speed. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest vehicle speed is selected in each case.

Specified value of RPM (module "Fixed speed")

This 16-bit value is selected by the function module fixed speed based on the parameterization for the fixed speed from the inputs.

IMPORTANT This value is valid if the inputs of the function module "RPM limitation" are valid and the signal "Enabling of fixed speed" is active.

Enabling of fixed speed

This bit signal is used as an enable signal for further "working speed control" function modules. It is set by the function module "Fixed speed" and "RPM limitation".

This signal is set if the inputs of the function module "Fixed speed" are valid, the times for the function enable and the clutch waiting time have expired and either the "Enabling of working speed control" signal or the "Request for working speed control (module "Power take-off")" signal is active.

Specified value of RPM (module "Hand throttle actuator")

This 16-bit value is calculated by the function module hand throttle actuator from the inputs. The RPM is converted on a linear basis between the parameterizable limits "Minimum engine speed via the hand-throttle actuator" and "Maximum engine speed via the hand-throttle actuator".

IMPORTANT This value is valid if the inputs of the function module "RPM limitation" are valid and the signal "Enabling of fixed speed" is active.

Ramp mode "ACTIVE" (otherwise pulse mode)

This bit signal is used by the function module "Change of engine speed" in order to switch from stage mode to ramp mode. For this purpose, the function module "Pulse and ramp mode" evaluates the actuation duration of the inputs for change of engine speed and sets this signal as soon as the actuation duration exceeds the time stored in the parameter "Ramp switchover time (stage or ramp mode)".

IMPORTANT This value is valid if the inputs of the function module "RPM limitation" are valid and the signal "Enabling of fixed speed" is active.
