Torque coordination, general
The torque interface in the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) coordinates and prioritizes (according to driveability and defined priority) the requirements of all systems that submit a torque request. It also determines how dynamically each request is to be implemented.
The following systems can make an engine torque request:
- The driver, through the accelerator pedal sensor (B37)
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP), via the drive CAN (CAN C1), powertrain control unit (N127) and suspension FlexRay (Flex E) from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4)
- Cruise control, over the drive CAN, powertrain control unit and suspension FlexRay from the Electronic Stability Program control unit
- Transmission control, via drive CAN, powertrain control unit from fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) (model 217, 222) or fully integrated transmission control electric controller unit control unit (Y3/8n4) (model 290)
- DISTRONIC PLUS, Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit (N62/4) (for code 23P (Driving Assistance Package) via the suspension FlexRay and powertrain control unit
- Rpm limitation
- Maximum vehicle speed limit
- Maximum torque limitation
Function sequence for torque coordination
According to the dynamic requirements, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit varies the engine torque requirement, by:
- Extending or shortening the injection duration of the fuel injectors in cylinders 1 to 8 (Y76/1 to Y76/8)
- Advancing or retarding the ignition angle of the ignition coils for cylinders 1+2 to cylinders 7+8 (T4 to T4/3)
(In this way very rapid change of the engine torque is possible.)
- A combination of adaptation of the injection period and adjustment of the ignition angle
Torque reserve
A torque reserve is achieved by extending the injection period, while simultaneously adjusting the ignition angle to "retarded". This enriches the fuel/air mixture while also preventing any premature increase in torque through retarding the ignition timing of the ignition angle.
Finally, any required increase in engine torque is achieved if necessary by timing advance of the ignition angle. This enables a fast and comfortable increase in torque.
