Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To show the driver the information, the instrument cluster can provide the following displays:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Symbols for control messages (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signal light, high beam)
- Symbols for warning messages (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Displays in menu (e.g. Driver assistance system, menu sequence)

Operation of instrument cluster as of 01.06.2017 (model 222) or as of 01.12.2017 (model 217):
Via the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group (S163/1), different menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1) can be displayed:
- The "Home" and "Back" button (S163/1s14) can be used to jump from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level. Via a long press of the "Home" and "Back" button it is possible to jump to the main menu.
- Via the instrument cluster finger navigation pad (S163/1s10) it is possible to navigate in menus (right/left) or lists (up/down). Pressing the instrument cluster finger navigation pad enables the respective selection or pending messages to be confirmed.
An acoustic feedback takes place during the operation of the control elements in the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics sends the status of the control elements over the steering wheel CAN (CAN LR), steering column tube module control unit (N80), suspension FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster speaker.
Operation of instrument cluster up to 31.05.2017 (model 222) or up to 30.11.2017 (model 217):
Via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111), different menu levels can be displayed in the instrument cluster:
- It is possible to scroll in the main menu via the system selection button (S110s3).
- It is possible to scroll within a menu in the submenus or in lists using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1).
- The "Back" (S110s4) button can be used to jump from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level.
- The "O. K." button. (S110s6) is used to confirm the respective selection or pending messages.
The available main menus and submenus depend on the vehicle equipment.

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The instrument cluster is activated by the user interface CAN being actuated, e.g. through:
- Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
- Driver door opened
- Change of circuit status for circuit 15
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s.
If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for information display test (up to 31.05.2017 (model 222) or 30.11.2017 (model 217))
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the instrument cluster via user interface CAN.
Function sequence for information display test (up to 31.05.2017 (model 222) or 30.11.2017 (model 217))
The monitor lamp test is used to perform a function test on certain warning and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster carries out this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the monitor lamp test:
- ESP®/ASR warning lamp OFF (yellow)
- Anti-lock braking system warning lamp (yellow)
- Seat belt warning lamp (red)
- Supplemental Restraint System indicator lamp (red)
- Fuel reserve warning lamp (yellow)
- Tire pressure monitoring system warning lamp (yellow) (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitoring system), Schrader)
- Brake force distribution warning lamp (yellow)
- Brake system warning lamp (red)
- Parking brake warning lamp (yellow)
- Engine diagnosis warning lamp (yellow)
- Parking system warning lamp (with code 235 (Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC))
- Power steering warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp (yellow)
- Preglow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
