DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
WARNING Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove cover over brake fluid reservoir. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install cover only after checking brake fluid level.  
2 Clean area around cap of brake fluid reservoir. Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
3 Remove cap of brake fluid reservoir and suction off some brake fluid. IMPORTANT This prevents the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when the brake pistons are pushed back.  
4 Move brake linings (3) to assembly position.   AR42.10-P-1710-01S 
5 Remove rear wheels.   AR40.10-P-1102A
6 Pull brake lining wear sensor out of backing plate of brake lining (3). When removing brakepad (3) or right rear brakepad wear sensor.  
7 Unscrew screw (7) and fold brake caliper (6) upward. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Guide pin to brake caliper support or bolt for guide pin to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1004-12Y 
8 Remove brake linings (3) from brake caliper support (2).    
9 Remove retaining springs (5).    
INSPECT Check     
10 Check brake pads (3) for wear and condition.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   If there is a problem,

replace brake linings (3) in sets.

11.1 Check brake disk (1) for condition and wear. Model 223
except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system)
 
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   IMPORTANT Only sets of brake disks (1) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
If there is a problem,

replace brake disks (1).

11.2 Check brake disk (1) for condition and wear. Model 223
with code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system)
 
    IMPORTANT Only sets of brake disks (1) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
If there is a problem,

replace corresponding brake disk (1).

12 Check guide pins (4) for damage and ease of movement. If there is a problem,

Replace brake caliper support (2).
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, brake caliper/brake caliper support to wheel carrier *BA42.10-P-1001-12Y 
13 Check brake caliper (6) and dust boots of brake pistons for leak tightness and damage. If there is a problem,

replace brake caliper (6).
 
      AR42.10-P-0080S 
14 Press back brake pistons all the way using pusher tool. SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If the brake piston is sluggish,

replace brake caliper (6).

CLEANING Clean     
15 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (3) on brake caliper support (2) (arrow) and on brake caliper (6). NOTES
Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
Otherwise the brake caliper (6), the dust boot on the brake piston, or the brake caliper support (2) may be damaged.
 
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
16 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
17 Operate brake pedal several times until brake pads (3) make contact with brake disks (1). IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
18 Check/correct brake fluid level in brake fluid reservoir.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210G
DANGER Risk of death  caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand. AS42.00-Z-0001-01A 
19 Perform brake test on test stand.
